Comets look to keep postseason hopes alive

LAPLACE – St. Charles Catholic, coming off a 30-12 win overDonaldsonville that kept the Comets’ playoff hopes alive, takes a break from District 9-3A play this week to play at Christian Life.

It will not be much of a break, however, as the Crusaders enter the game as the third-ranked team in Class 2A with a 7-1 record. Christian Lifeclinched a tie for the District 7-2A title with a 21-0 victory over Clinton Friday night.

But the Comets just have to look back to 1999 for inspiration. Then theCrusaders were the 11th-ranked team in Class 2A when they traveled to St. Charles Catholic. The Comets, which had lost six straight up to thattime, upset Christian Life, 19-13, as Nick Monica ran for 120 yards and two touchdowns and threw a touchdown pass.

St. Charles Catholic improved to 3-5 overall and 1-2 in District 9-3A withits win last Friday. The victory was also the Comets first in district sincethey moved up to Class 3A prior to the 1999-2000 season.

The Comets did most of their damage on the ground, rushing for 251 yards.

Doug Friloux led the way with 111 yards and a touchdown on 21 carries.

Jason Waguespack passed for 110 yards and two touchdowns on 11 completions in 21 attempts. He also kicked a 46-yard field goal.The defense allowed 297 yards, 202 through the air, but held the Tigers scoreless after halftime.

The player to watch for Christian Life is quarterback Michael Clayton, one of the most-highly recruited players in the state. Clinton held him to 15yards Friday but he did score on a 1-yard run. The Crusaders were held to111 yards in offense in the game. Jeff Johnson did run for 97 yards andtwo touchdowns.

It was the Christian Life defense that made the difference. The Crusadersheld Clinton to 148 yards and forced seven turnovers. All three of theCrusaders’ touchdowns came after turnovers.

Leading the blocking up front for Johnson and Clayton is Ryan Phillips, a two-way threat.

Kickoff for the game is scheduled for 7 p.m.St. Charles Catholic closes out the regular season next week at E.D. White.
