Lady Comets serve up win over Lutcher

LAPLACE – Knee pads were definitely in order when St. Charles Catholic andLutcher hooked up Tuesday afternoon in the District 6-III opener in the Comet Gym.

The teams combined for 86 digs as the Lady Comets took round one in district with a 17-15, 6-15, 15-3 victory.

St. Charles Catholic improved to 10-16 overall and 1-0 in district. Lutcherdropped to 14-11 overall and 0-1 in district play.

St. Charles Catholic never trailed in the deciding game, jumping out to an 8-1lead. A kill by Amanda Helm on the Lady Comets’ opener serve made it 2-0. Adig, a block and a kill by Sarah Weber over the next two serves made it 4-0.

After Lutcher got its first point on a cross-court kill by Kassie Waguespack, the Lady Comets went on a 4-0 run behind an ace by Weber and a dink by Nikki Michel.

Lutcher pulled to within 8-3 on its next serve on a kill by Waguespack and an ace by Michelle Roussel. But the Lady Comets came back with another 4-0run with Michel serving behind four Lutcher errors.

St. Charles Catholic regained the serve on a block by Monica Arcuri and madeit 14-3 on an ace by Katie Arcuri. After a Lutcher timeout, the Lady Cometsgot the match winner as Arcuri’s serve was dug out wide.

Lutcher led wire-to-wire in the second game after taking an early 4-1 lead.

An ace by Ashley Huguet and a kill and a dink by Jill Martin made it 3-0 on Lutcher’s first serve. Martin added an ace and Lacey Millet delivered a dinkfor a 6-2 lead.

St. Charles Catholic closed to with 6-4 on an ace by Heather Heltz. Lutcheranswered with an 8-0 on its next serve with Huguet serving. A block byRoussel and an ace by Huguet made it 8-4 before a Lady Comets timeout.

A dink and a block by Martin built the lead to 13-4. After another St. CharlesCatholic timeout, a defensive error by the Lady Comets made it 14-4. TheLady Bulldogs got the game winner a serve later on an ace by Lindsay Louque.

The first game was a wild affair. St. Charles Catholic appeared to be cruisingto an easy first game victory, taking a 7-0 lead on its first three serves.

Monica Arcuri had an ace and Brittany Vicknair two during the run. KatieArcuri added a cross-court kill.

Lutcher began to chip into the lead on its next serve behind a kill by Martin and a dig by Louque. On the next serve, Waguespack had a kill and a block topull the Lady Bulldogs to within 7-5. An ace by Roussel tied the game at 7.St. Charles Catholic regained the lead at 10-7 on its next serve behind killsby Katie Arcuri and Monica Arcuri and an ace by Michel. A kill by Vicknair aserve later made it 11-7.

Lutcher again rallied tying the game at 12 behind a cross court kill by Waguespack and two aces by Martin. A kill and an ace by Monica Arcuri gavethe Lady Comets a 14-12 advantage before Lutcher tied the game for a third time behind two attack errors by the Lady Comets.

Lutcher took a 15-14 lead on a cross-court kill by Waguespack after digs by Roussel and Waguespack. The Lady Comets broke the serve as Weberdelivered a kill after a dig by Michel.

The Lady Comets tied the game on its next serve on a block by Weber. Aftera defensive error by Lutcher and a timeout by the Bulldogs, Katie Arcuri delivered a kill down the middle of the court for the game winner.

“We did a much better job of playing defense today,” St. Charles Catholiccoach Michelle Dearmitt said. “I thought we were more aggressive going tothe ball. In the third game, we knew we had to play with the same intensity asin the first game. We changed our mind set around and did what we had todo.”St. Charles Catholic had 12 serves, led by Monica Arcuri’s four. Lutchercoach Ricky Leblanc said the Lady Comets serving played a big part in the game.

“They served the ball well,” Leblanc said. “We got into some spots where westruggled on tough serves and let them have some good runs. It starts withpass and receive and they served tough. Credit them with serving the ballwell.”Monica Arcuri also led the Lady Comets with six kills. Katie Arcuri had 10digs. Vicknair had nine, Monica Arcuri had eight and Heltz seven. Weber ledthe Lady Comets with three blocks.

Martin had a team-high three aces and three blocks for the Lady Bulldogs.

Waguespack led the way with eight kills and was the team’s top defender.

St. Charles Catholic defeated St. James and Lutcher lost to E.D. White indistrict Thursday.
