Destrehan runs by Lady Tigers

DESTREHAN – Destrehan used a 14-0 run in the first game to sweep past Hahnville, 15-4, 15-10, Thursday afternoon.

The victory completed a two-game sweep of the first round of District 9-I for the Lady Cats. Destrehan improved to 8-15 overall. Hahnville fell to 1-1in district and 18-10 overall.

Hahnville took a 4-1 lead on its first serve of the game on an ace by Jennifer Hicks and three Destrehan errors.

Two serves later, Destrehan tied the game at 4 with Meagan Stock serving behind a kill by Atina Porter. Porter then blocked a shot by LaToya Jones,giving the Lady Cats their first lead. Flora Brown then hit a spike long,making it 6-4.

After a Hahnville timeout, another long spike by Brown and a kill gave Destrehan an 8-4 lead. Two Hahnville errors made it 10-4 before Hahnvilletook another timeout. A downball by Jessica Johnson and a kill increased thelead to 13-4. Destrehan got the game winner on two more Hahnville errors.Hahnville had a 2-1 lead in the second game behind a kill by Elizabeth Landry and a Destrehan error.

But the Lady Cats went on another run with Stock serving, scoring four straight points to take a 5-2 lead. Porter had a dink and a kill and Stock anace during the run.

Hahnville pulled to within 5-4 on an ace by Jones. A serve later, the LadyTigers took a 7-6 behind a dink by Lindsey Yochim and two Destrehan errors.

Destrehan answered with a kill into the right corner by Porter and two Hahnville errors to retake the lead at 9-7.

A kill by Brown brought Hahnville to within one. But Destrehan began to pullaway a serve later on a kill by Porter after a dig by Stock. A lift off a dig byKatherine Kain made it 12-9.

Hahnville made it 12-10 with a kill by Brown but Porter broke the serve with a dink and Jan Chauvin followed with a dink to make it 13-10. Johnson servedan ace a serve later and the Lady Cats got the match winner on a defensive error by the Lady Tigers.

“For once, everybody was on,” Destrehan head coach Calvin Ike said. “Welook good serving, we look good setting and we looked good hitting.”Porter had a game-high 13 kills and was the team’s top defender.

“Tina was on,” Ike said. “She had her best game of the season. She was on aroll.”Landry had six kills for Hahnville. Yochim had two aces while Brown was thetop defender.

“We just made too many unforced errors,” Hahnville head coach Mendi Leboeuf said. “We made a lot of hitting errors in the first game. We justnever got into any kind of rhythm.”
