EDGARD – Ghosts, ghouls, goblins and witches will take to the streets of the River Parishes later this month – all in search of treats.
But this fun tradition can be tricky reminds LSU Ag Center extension agent and Safe Kids coordinator Cathy Holmes. Therefore, Holmes offers a fewtips to help parents ensure that their little ones have a safe and fun night out.
Costumes contribute in a large meaure to accidents by catching on fire or causing falls. Many costumes cannot be easily seen by motorists. Masks canalso impair the trick-or-treater’s vision.
Tips for safe costumes are:
Make sure the costume is flame resistant.
Use makeup instead of masks – it’s safer.
Make eye holes bigger in masks if it is difficult to see.
Shorten costumes to four to six inches above the floor.
Wear shoes that fit.
Secure hats so that they won’t slip.
Allow children to carry only flexible knives, swords and other props.
Keep one free hand to grip hand rails.
Trick-or-treat safety tips:
Trick-or-treat in groups, with a parent is best.
Always walk on paved or cleared paths.
Don’t cut across lawns.
Stop at all corners.
Carefully look left, right, left before crossing a street.
Never run between parked cars.
Stop to fix costumes if something slips or breaks and ask for help if you need it.
Only trick-or-treat at homes of people you know. Set up boundaries.
Tips on being visible:
Wear at least one light – a bright color.
Wear reflective tape, front and back.
Wave your flashlight to make sure you are seen by motorists.
Inspect all treats and only accept wrapped candy with the original manufacturers wrapping.
Prepare children by explaining to them the limits, boundaries and tips to keep them safe. Adhere to the local established curfew time.”Keeping safety in mind can lead to a much more enjoyable Halloween,” Holmes concludes.
