SCC looking to get bounces

LAPLACE – The bounces have not gone St. Charles Catholic’s way in recentweeks.

Especially on onsides kicks.

In each of the St. Charles Catholic’s District 9-3A contests the last twoweeks, the Comets have come within an onsides kick of having a chance to tie the game late. Two weeks ago, it was Lutcher which recovered a kick atthe Comets 30 and drove for the clinching touchdown in a 21-7 win. And lastweek, Thaddeus Sutherland fell on an onsides kick with 31 seconds left, enabling St. James to run out the clock in a 27-20 victory.Those two losses have dropped St. Charles Catholic to 0-2 in District 9-3Aand 2-5 overall. The Comets will be looking to reserve their fortunes whenthey host Donaldsonville Friday night at Thomas Dupuy Stadium. Kickoff isscheduled for 7 p.m.St. Charles Catholic gained 278 yards against St. James and did not turn theball over. Jason Waguespack completed 18-of-29 passes for 196 yards andtwo touchdowns. The junior quarterback has now passed for 1,350 yards andseven touchdowns on the season. Todd Babin ran for a score as the Cometsgained 82 yards on the ground against the Wildcats.

But the Comets also could not contain the St. James offense. The Wildcats’Chris Hymel passed for 230 yards and a touchdown. Travell Steib and MichaelHarry combined to help the Wildcats rush for 130 yards.

St. Charles Catholic will be facing a Donaldsonville team that is 1-0 in District9-3A and 4-3 overall. The Tigers’ latest win came Friday night, 24-17 overBerwick.

Terrance Brown rushed for 92 yards and two touchdowns, including one from 63 yards, to help the Tigers rally from a 17-6 halftime deficit. Dio Bernardadded 93 yards and a score as the Tigers accounted for 230 yards on the ground. Oscar Bennett also scored on the ground. Brown also passed for 89yards on eight completions in 15 attempts. The defense gave up 215 yards,193 coming on the ground.

Brown is one of the leading passers in the area in Class 3A with 810 yards and eight touchdowns on 58-of-111 passing. He has been intercepted justtwice all season. His favorite receiver has been Edmond Joseph who had 29catches for 459 yards and four touchdowns going into the Berwick game.

Joseph had 194 total yards and three touchdowns in a victory over St.

James two weeks ago.

Antonio Johnson, who also plays running back, is one of the Tigers’ leading defenders in the secondary. Jamor Collins and Jamall Landry also lead anexperienced defensive backfield.

Donaldsonville defeated the Comets, 14-9, at home a year ago. The Cometsout-gained the Tigers, 240-139, but turned the ball over six times.

St. Charles Catholic travels to Christian Life next week.
