BOUTTE – For Hahnville, it was sweet revenge for back-to-back losses in the past two seasons, as the Tigers laid a heavy 55-19 pounding on the South Lafourche Tarpons.
Hahnville improved to 7-0 overall and 4-0 in District 7-5A. South Lafourchedropped to 2-1 in district and 4-3 overall.
Quarterback Dawan Landry rushed for four touchdowns in the lopsided game, and passed for a fifth. He rushed for 94 yards and passed for 130 moreyards to dominate the statistics.
Skylar Boyle added 93 additional yards rushing and received a 25-yard pass for a touchdown, and Chuckie Taylor piled on 51 more rushing yards and a touchdown.
The Tarpons’ grim evening began on a more upbeat note, as Jonathan Hanberry connected with Dustin Parra for the opening score in South Lafourche’s first possession of the game, with 6:43 remaining in the first quarter. That capped a 76-yard drive which followed Hahnville’s first briefpossession.
The first flicker of the firestorm to come arrived with Lionel Evans’ 24-yard run which set the Tigers on the Tarpons’ 39-yard line with 5:19 remaining in the quarter. On the next play, Skylar Boyle scrambled in for the firstHahnville score with 5:11 remaining. Matt Cummins scored the extra point totie the tally at 7-all, which is how the score stood at the end of the quarter.
By that time, Hahnville was again pounding on the Tarpons’ door, capping a 64-yard drive which took them to South Lafourche’s 1-yard line. However, akeeper by Landry fell short by inches and the Tarpons took over on downs with 9:32 remaining in the half.
South Lafourche struggled to break out beyond their own 4-yard line but ended up having to punt. Unfortunately, it was Mark Young on the puntreception and he scrambled 40 yards on the return for the second Hahnville score with 7:25 left in the half. Cummins nailed the point after, and Hahnvilleled 14-7.
South Lafourche never saw daylight after that.
The Tarpons’ next possession struggled five yards backwards, thanks to Lloyd Brimmer’s sack of Hanberry at the Tarpon 15-yard line, then South Lafourche struggled across midfield in a series of scambles by James Rhone, Reuben Billiot and Walter Nelson. Finally, it was Nelson on a reverse to scorea 45-yard touchdown which left the Hahnville defense flat-footed.
The extra point kick by Jace Guidry fell wide right, and the Tarpons trailed 14-13 with 3:14 remaining in the half.
Here’s where it started getting one-sided. The South Lafourche kickoffstarted Hahnville at their own 22-yard line. A series of passes by Landry, especially a 29-yard reception by Lionel Evans, quicked moved the Tigers into striking distance.
With 35 seconds remaining in the half, Landry swept left on a keeper for a 32-yard TD run. Capped by Cummins’ point after, Hahnville led 21-13.The kickoff went to Nelson, who returned to the 30-yard line. Hanberry thenwas chased off the field, losing three yards, and then a fumble during a flubbed reverse was snared by Lloyd Brimmer at the South Lafourche 25- yard line.
On the next play, 31 seconds after the last touchdown, Skylar Boyle thundered in for the next, with four seconds left in the half. Cummins’ pointafter made the halftime score 28-13.
South Lafourche rallied briefly as they received the opening second-half kickoff and drove downfield in five plays, climaxing in a 46-yard touchdown pass reception to Nelson, with Jarod Joseph clinging to his jersey for most of the way. A two-point conversion try, though, failed and the Tarpons stilltrailed 28-19 with 9:41 left in the third quarter.
Dawan Landry then scored three touchdowns in a row to bury the hapless Tarpons.
The first came on the next possession, the breakout play coming with a pass which was tipped by a Tarpon defender into the hands of Mark Young, who reached the South Lafourche 20-yard line.
Landry then carried three times, ending in an 11-yard TD run with 5:34 remaining in the third. Cummins’ extra point made it 35-19.Four plays into the Tarpons’ next possession, a pass to Dustin Parra connected but a hit coughed up the ball and Robert Bate recovered for the Tigers with 3:58 remaining at the South Lafourche 39-yard line.
Four plays later, Landry scored in a 2-yard run, after Boyle did most of the legwork in the preceding 37 yards.
Again, Cummins hit the point after, and Hahnville led 42-19 with 2:41 left in the quarter.
South Lafourche again tried to generate an offensive drive, and Mark Barnes stepped up and intercepted for the Tigers. Three plays later, Landry againstepped into the endzone on the first play of the fourth quarter. Cummins’extra point kick was wide left, but Hahnville led 48-19.
By this time, South Lafourche was barely going through the motions. On thethird play after the kickoff, Robert Bate intercepted for his second turnover and started the Tigers off on their final scoring drive at the Tarpon 23-yard line.
This time, it took four plays until Charles Taylor stepped over on an 8-yard run for the last touchdown with 9:01 left in the game. Cummins booted theextra point for the 55-19 score.
South Lafourche’s next drive ended as Hahnville took over on downs at their own 28-yard line. Hahnville’s next drive ended as South Lafourche took overon downs at their own 40-yard line. Four missed passes later, Hahnville againtook over on downs and Dawan Landry knelt for the last play.
