Wildcats ‘D’ back in form

DESTREHAN – Destrehan was back to its old defensive ways against Central Lafourche Friday night.
The Wildcats held the Trojans to 140 total yards and forced two turnovers. Central Lafourche had almost as many yards in penalties (100)as yards gained.
Randy Roth bounced back from an off game against East St. John the weekbefore to complete 17-of-25 passes for 265 yards and a touchdown. FredSmith caught four passes for 79 yards. Destrehan finished with 404 totalyards, a good portion of which came in the first half as the Wildcats jumped out to a 27-0 lead.
Roth got the Wildcats on the scoreboard in the first quarter on a 9-yard pass to Smith. After Lekeith Robertson recovered an onsides kick on theensuing kickoff, Jonathan Scifres came in to kick a 33-yard field goal.
Dechad Ward, who finished with 59 yards on 15 carries, scored on runs of 2 and 1 yard in the second quarter. Scifres added his second field goal,from 23 yards, to make it 27-0 at the half. The victory improvedDestrehan to 5-1 overall and 2-1 in District 7-5A play.
This week, Destrehan hosts South Terrebonne in a district matchup.
Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.South Terrebonne is coming off a 43-0 loss at Hahnville last week. Theloss dropped the Gators to 2-4 overall and 0-2 in district.
South Terrebonne finished with 97 yards in the game. Chris Underwoodcompleted just 3-of-20 passes for 19 yards and was intercepted twice.
The Gators also had a punt and a field goal blocked. The Gator defense gaveup 371 yards, 280 on the ground. Jeremy Van Buren had two interceptionsin the contest.
South Terrebonne has struggled with its wing-T attack this season, scoring 95 points in six games. The Gators have yet to score in district,having been shut out by South Lafourche in the opener.
The defense has five starters returning from last year. Starters on the 4-3 defense include end Mark Steveonson and linebackers Jonathan Vincent and Robbie Robichaux.
A year ago, Ward scored five times to lead Destrehan to a 48-12 victory at South Terrebonne. Ward finished with 166 yards as the Wildcats gained389 yards. The defense held the Gators to 77 yards and forced fiveturnovers.
Destrehan hosts South Lafourche next week in District 7-5A action.
