Tigers, Tarpns battle for first in District 7-5A

BOUTTE – Hahnville, off to its best start since 1994, faces one of its sternest tests this week when the Tigers host South Lafourche.

Kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. at Hahnville’s Tiger Stadium.Both teams enter the game undefeated in District 7-5A. Hahnville is 6-0overall for the first time since 1994, the Tigers’ last state championship season, and 3-0 in District 7-5A. South Lafourche is 4-2 overall and 2-0in district play.

Hahnville is coming off a 43-0 victory at home over South Terrebonne. TheTigers dominated on both sides of the ball, gaining 371 yards in offense.

The Tigers rushed for 280 yards, led by Skyler Boyle with 112 yards and two touchdowns on 10 carries. Dawan Landry added 98 yards and a scoreon the ground and added 67 yards and a touchdown on 6-of-17 passing.

Charles Taylor and Brooke Dufrene also scored rushing touchdowns.

The Hahnville defense held South Terrebonne to 97 total yards and forced two turnovers. The Gators were held to 3-of-20 passing for 19 yards.Jason Naquin and Laron Landry had interceptions. Robert Bate blocked apunt and Brandon Hills knocked down a field goal attempt in the game.

The Tigers will be facing a South Lafourche team looking to rebound after a 28-26 loss to Rummel Friday. South Lafourche led 19-7 at halftime butwas out-scored 21-7 in the second half. The Tarpons gained 210 yards inthe game, doing most of the damage on the ground with 192 yards. Thedefense allowed 286 yards, 190 coming via the rushing attack.

Reuben Billiot scored twice and Dustin Parra added a 1-yard run in the first half to give South Lafourche the 12-point first half lead. TheTarpons’ only score in the second half came on a 95-yard kickoff return by Walter Nelson in the fourth quarter.

Nelson, Billiot and James Rhone lead the rushing attack for the Tarpons.

Junior Jonathan Hanberry returns at quarterback after passing for over 500 yards last season. His receivers include tight ends Michael Bourda andRichard Lynn.

But the strong spot for the Tarpons is their offensive line. Guard BrandonBarrilleaux, a returning all-district selection, leads the way. At the othertackle spot is junior Ross Jambon. Ryan Brunet will be at tackle and CraigOlivier at center.

The defense is less experienced with just four returning starters. Parra,Isaac Caine, Shawn Gayton, Mark Breaux and Guy Lefort lead the push up front. Two converted defensive backs, Cullen Rebstock and Dustin Dufrene,lead the linebacking corps. They will be joined by Brandon Matherne andDerrick Pitre. The secondary consists of Colby O’Quin, Sean Melancon andDustin Gisclair.

In last year’s game, Gavin Buffinet scored four times to lead South Lafourche to a 41-14 victory over Hahnville at home. Hahnville gained 331yards in the game but could manage only two Kade Rogers field goals and a touchdown run by Landry.

Hahnville hosts Brother Martin next week in a non-district game.
