Bulldogs meet Cards in District 9-3A battle

LUTCHER – It wasn’t the prettiest of wins in the rain, but the Lutcher Bulldogs will still take their 21-7 victory over St. Charles Catholic Fridaynight.
The Bulldogs were held to 205 yards in offense and committed two turnovers. But thanks to a fourth-down gamble that resulted in a 38-yardtouchdown pass and a 54-yard interception return by Chris Lee, the Bulldogs were able to pull out to a 14-0 lead and hold on.
Lutcher improved to 3-3 overall and 1-0 in District 9-3A with the win.
The Lutcher rushing attack did most of the damage. William Adams andTyrone Martin combined to rush for 159 yards on 35 carries. Risley St.Germain threw for 34 yards and scored on a 2-yard run.
This week, Lutcher hosts E.D. White in District 9-3A action. Kickoff isscheduled for 7 p.m.E.D. White is coming off a 27-17 loss at home to Riverside in non-districtplay. The loss dropped the Cardinals to 4-2 overall.Lutcher, which has already faced two of Class 4A’s top running backs in Walker’s Tyson Roy and Assumption’s Brandon Jacobs, faces one of the best in Class 3A in Jonathan Becnel. Becnel had 63 yards on 19 carriesagainst the Rebels, increasing his season totals to 737 yards and eight touchdowns on 119 carries.
E.D. White finished the game with 111 yards on 36 carries but was held to27 yards in the air. Evan Matherne completed four of his 12 passes, threeto Matt Matis for 20 yards. Matis also ran for 44 yards on 11 carries. TheCardinal defense gave up 365 yards to the Rebels, 238 coming on the ground.
The E.D. White special teams gave the Cardinals all their points. TheCardinals scored on a safety on an errant snap on a punt attempt by the Rebels. Matis then took the ensuing free kick back 65 yards for atouchdown. The kicking game has been a strong point, led by kicker JustinVerrett and punter James Wilcox.
Despite being held in check by the Rebels, E.D. White enters Friday’s gameas the highest-scoring team in District 9-3A with 192 points. The line hasbeen a team strength, led by senior tackle Marc Montet and center Chris Rodrigue. Joining Matherne and Becnel in the backfield in the wing-Toffense are wingbacks John Hymel and Christian Stanga.
The Cardinals have also given up the fewest points, 86, in the district.
That defense is led by the line of Shaffer Robichaux and Marc Talbot at the ends and Stephen Raynal, Michael Bouterie and Ryan Gravois at the tackles.
Luke Savoie and Josh Perque are the linebackers. In the secondary areVerrett, David Stock, Derek Hebert and Laird Ellender.
Two of the Bulldogs’ stars in 1999 had big games against the Cardinals last year in a 38-14 victory. Thomas Ricks threw for 344 yards and threetouchdowns. Kenneth Johnson caught six passes for 222 yards and twoscores.
Lutcher steps out of District 7-5A play next week to travel to Covington.
