Donaldsonville holds off late St. James rally

DONALDSONVILLE – Donaldsonville held off a late St. James drive, preservinga 34-28 victory in the District 9-3A opener for both teams.
Donaldsonville improved to 3-3 overall while St. James fell to 3-3. It was theTigers’ first win over the Wildcats since 1991.
St. James finished with 306 yards in offense, 211 coming on the ground.Travell Steib had a team-high 111 yards and two touchdowns on 16 carries.
Michael Harry added 15 carries for 103 yards and a touchdown. Chris Hymelcompleted 4-of-10 passes for 95 yards and a score.
Donaldsonville had 342 yards in offense. Terrance Brown completed 15-of-26passes for 237 yards and four touchdowns. Edmond Joseph had 194 totalyards in the game and scored three times.
St. James got on the scoreboard first on a 1-yard run by Harry with 7:51left in the first quarter. Steib added a 34-yard touchdown run with 1:35 left,giving the Wildcats a 14-0 lead.
Donaldsonville cut the deficit to 14-6 on a 7-yard touchdown pass from Brown to Oscar Bennett at the 8:25 mark of the second quarter. St. Jamesanswered with a 22-yard touchdown pass from Hymel to Davin Dennis, making it 21-6. With 3:17 left in the half, Brown lateraled to Joseph whothrew a 43-yard touchdown pass to Tremaine Brown, making it 21-12 at the half.
Donaldsonville opened the second half with an 82-yard touchdown pass from Brown to Joseph with 7:05 left in the third quarter. That combo struck againon a 32-yard touchdown with 5:49 remaining to give the Tigers a 27-21 lead heading into the fourth quarter.
Donaldsonville increased the lead to 34-21 with 9:48 left on a 62-yard pass from Brown to Terrance Brown. St. James pulled to within 34-28 with 7:37left on a 4-yard touchdown by Steib.
St. James plays host to St. Charles Catholic next Friday.
