Lions offer St. James final test before district

ST. JAMES – St. James has one last tune-up before heading into District 9-3A play next week as the Wildcats host Booker T. Washington Friday night.Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.St. James is 2-2 after a 28-7 loss against Assumption Friday night. TheWildcats tied the game at 7 on a 3-yard touchdown run by Travell Steib in the second quarter but the Mustangs took control in the second half behind running back Brandon Jacobs. Jacobs, who was held to 14 yards in the firsthalf, broke through for 179 yards and three touchdowns over the final 24 minutes.
St. James gained 156 yards in the game, 140 coming on the ground. ChrisHymel completed 4-of-16 passes for 50 yards and two interceptions.
Booker T. Washington is coming off a 62-6 loss against West Jefferson.The Lions are 0-3 this season and have been out-scored 140-20.
Washington lost nine players on defense from last year’s squad that lost to Franklinton, 34-28, in the Class 3A bi-district playoffs after winning the District 10-3A title. Also new is the quarterback and the receivingcorps.
Sophomore Tony Jefferson steps in at quarterback. He will be joined in thebackfield by sophomores Joseph Stewart and Emmual Spurlocte. Thereceivers are also inexperienced led by junior Jerome Tobias and sophomore Robert Perry. The line features three seniors in tight end MackTerrance and tackles Danny Dillon and Brandon Lane.
The defense is also young with just three seniors – Dillon and Lane at the tackles and Terrance in the secondary. Derrick Bishop and Durrell Taylor,both juniors, are the ends. The linebacking corps features sophomoresAlikia Johnson and Troy Scott and junior Karl Stinger. Rounding out thebackfield is Stewart, Tobias and sophomore Kevin Owney.
Last season, St. James defeated Booker T. Washington, 30-6. Davin Dennishad four catches for 90 yards and two touchdowns. The Wildcats out-gained the Lions, 398-235.
St. James opens District 9-3A play next Friday on the road atDonaldsonville.
