LHS comes off the ropes to get by Lady Rebels

RESERVE – Riverside had Lutcher on the ropes twice during the teams’ match Tuesday afternoon at Riverside.

But both times the Lady Bulldogs were able to get off that rope, taking a 15- 11, 15-8 victory over the Lady Rebels.

Lutcher improved to 6-5 while Riverside fell to 3-2.

Riverside opened the match on an 8-2 run. Kelly Louque, Jessica Watts andCassie St. Amant all had aces during the run while Mindy Richard added adink.

Lutcher began its comeback on its next serve. Kassie Waguespack blocked ashot for a point, then came back with a kill down the left side to cut the deficit to 8-5. A serve later, Waguespack delivered an ace and LindseyLouque followed with a kill to make it 9-7.

A kill by Jill Martin and a dink by Louque pulled the Lady Bulldogs to within. Aserve later, Martin killed a lob at the net and Waguespack followed with a block to give Lutcher a 13-11 lead. Riverside held off two serves but Lutchercame back to get the game winner on a kill by Waguespack after Cary Roussel had delivered one to break the Lady Rebels’ serve.

Riverside also started the second game on a roll, jumping out to a 4-0 lead.

Kelly Louque again started the run with an ace and Amy Hymel followed with a block.

Martin broke the serve with a cross-court kill. Lutcher then tied the game ontwo aces by Ashley Huguet, a kill by Martin and a dink by Michelle Roussel. Aserve later, Waguespack delivered a kill to put the Lady Bulldogs ahead.

Riverside tied the game at five on an ace by Watts. Hymel followed with adink and Jennifer Keating added a kill down the left side to give the Lady Rebels a 7-6 lead.

But Lutcher would come back two serves later, rolling off six straight points behind kills by Waguespack and Martin. Another kill by Waguespack to theback row a serve later gave the Lady Bulldogs a 13-8 advantage. Afterbreaking Riverside’s serve, Roussel served an ace to the back row to bring up match point. Lutcher got the winner on a defensive error by the LadyRebels.

“We knew it was a big game for everybody because everybody knows everybody,” Lutcher head coach Ricky LeBlanc said. “I still don’t think we areplaying as well as we are capable of playing. We can’t get the intensity. Wewant to play our style. We have to control the ball and play our style and wehave been struggling to do that. But we fought through that and came out ontop.”Waguespack and Martin each had a match-high eight kills for Lutcher.

Michelle Roussel added four kills while Cary Roussel and Louque had three apiece.

Hymel led Riverside with three kills. Louque served up five aces.”We couldn’t get the job done on the outside,” Riverside head coach Toni Miano said. “We had no offense. We have been struggling all week. We have toput it behind us and go on to the next game.”
