I started my first semester of college about two weeks ago. I do not think I haveever seen so many frightened faces as I did that first day. It was a day I thoughtwould never come, kind of like I cannot imagine myself turning 30, but one day I will.
Quite frequently now, my friends and I will find ourselves saying old people phrases like: “lt seems like just yesterday…or, we were so much older when we were attheir age.”My, how time does fly, but more importantly, did we enjoy it? A popular bit of advice from college advisors is to pick an occupation you will enjoy. I happen tothink that it is completely necessary to find enjoyment in the small things, too.
Because, some days, doesn’t work just feel like work even if you did enjoy it yesterday? Do you remember when you were a little kid and you had so much fun doing the dumbest things? You could have a blast just running around in circles. Your mindsetwas to make every situation enjoyable. You’d play I Spy on the way to the grocerystore and then you’d count the red cars in the parking lot when you got there.
So, where did that attitude of enjoyment go? If we’re honest we’d all admit that we’ve lost it, to a pretty large degree. I think that as time goes by our hearts gethardened by things such as stress, worry, debt, deadlines and tragedy. We mustteach ourselves to reverse this process. Make the time to do the little things theyyou enjoy – the things that relax you. Try doing something nice for someone, you’dbe surprised at how much joy it will bring you.
My personal favorite is to talk to God before I start my day. Somehow, He alwaysknows how to handle my day better than I do.
So that’s my goal as I start my college career. I will enjoy things, even if they’renot always the things I would like to be doing. Because, if I don’t enjoy my life, neither will anyone else. I won’t be just another member of the rat race. I hope thatyou won’t either.
