Lady Cats sweep past Ponchatoula

RESERVE – The East St. John Lady Cats overcame a power outage in pregameand a rally by Ponchatoula in the first game to take a 15-7, 15-11 victory Thursday afternoon in the East St. John gym.The Lady Cats evened their record at 1-1 with the victory.

Jennie DeBowes led the way for East St. John with five aces and five kills.Danielle Washington also had five kills while Takiyah Joseph provided top defense.

Ponchatoula grabbed a 1-0 lead in the first game on an ace by Jessica Forrest. But East St. John would answer with nine unanswered points. Adefensive error with Lindsey Caronna serving tied the game at 1. A servicebreak later, Jennifer Tamburo dinked a shot over to give the Lady Cats the lead for good. Washington came in from the back line a serve later to dig oneover and DeBowes and Tamburo dinked shots over to make it 7-1. A kill byDeBowes and a defensive error gave the Lady Cats a 9-1 lead.

Two errors by the Lady Cats brought Ponchatoula to within 9-3 before East St. John took advantage of three straight errors with Sandy Shields servingto take a 12-3 advantage. Ponchatoula pulled to within 12-7 behind an ace byDana Castjohn and a downball by Forrest but the Lady Cats closed out the first game on a 3-0 run.
