Destrehan opens season with win against WSJ

DESTREHAN – Destrehan head volleyball coach Calvin Ike has a few holes to fill from his District 9-I championship team a few years ago.
But even with the Lady Cats still deciding on a setter and a big hitter, they got the season off to a good start Tuesday afternoon with a 15-0, 15-2 victory over West St. John.Destrehan returns six players from the team that advanced to the stet tournament for the first time since the early 1990s and that made it to the regionals. One of those six, Jessica Johnson, got it started Tuesday, servingan ace for a 3-0 lead. A lift by the Lady Rams with Jan Chauvin serving madeit 5-0. After a timeout by West St. John, Chauvin served an ace and TinaPorter delivered a kill to the back row for an 8-0 lead. Meagan Stock wouldadd another kill to build the lead to 10.
West St. John’s Janell Morris broke the serve with a kill but the Lady Catscame back a serve later to make it 11-0 on an ace by Stock. Three defensiveerrors help the Lady Cats go up by 14-0. Destrehan got the game winner as aspike by Johnson was dug out wide.
West St. John took a 1-0 lead on a defensive error by the Lady Cats withMorris serving. Destrehan came back to take a 7-1 lead on its second servebehind three aces by Stock. Katherine Kain then killed a free ball at the netto make it 9-1. An ace by Porter help build the lead to 10.West St. John got its second point of the match on a defensive error withCiara Borne serving. But Destrehan broke the serve and went ahead 13-2 onan ace by Kain. After another serve by Kain was dug out, Chauvin had a spikeattempt returned wide for the match winner.
“We are still trying to decide our setter and the setter is a main part of our team,” Ike said. “I think we will be OK as far as our hitting but as far as a bighitter goes, we are lacking that right now. We have the ability to be a playoffteam once again so we are looking down the road to that.”
