Luminais third at tour finale

GONZALES – Steve Luminais of Reserve shot a 2-over par 146 to finish third overall at the Gulf States PGA Junior Tour Championship at Pelican Point Golf Club Wednesday.

Kevin Jones of Crystal Springs, Miss., playing in the boys’ 14-15 division,placed first overall with a 7-under 137. Brad Hammonds was second with aneven-par 144. Luminais tied Frank Briseno of River Ridge and Casey Russellat 146.

Hammonds was also first in the 16-17 division. Lumanais was third in thedivision after losing in a scorecard playoff. He closed with an even par 72after shooting a 2-over par 74 in the first round.

“It was alright,” Luminais said. “I played pretty good. I putted really well andhit my driver really well, I didn’t hit my irons as good as I normally do.”Luminais opened the first round with a 36, playing the back nine first. On No.1, his 10th hole, Luminais hit his drive into the water but then hit a 2-iron 205 yards into the wind to within 10 feet to salvage a bogey.

The event was the final one that counted toward points for the player of the year award on the tour this summer.

The Gulf States PGA will hold the Thanksgiving Classic at Beau Pre Country Club in Natchez, Miss., Nov. 21-22.Luminais, along with Riverside teammate Brett Bergeron, will be playing in the pre-collegiate tournament at The Bluffs on Thompson Creek this week.

HASBROUCK WINS SIXTH STRAIGHT STATE TITLE – ALISO VIEJO, Calif. -Lesil Hasbrouck, formerly of LaPlace and a member of the 2000 Class 2A state champion Riverside golf team who now resides in Aliso Viejo, recently won her sixth consecutive girls’ state championship in her age division (girls 13-15) by nine strokes at the Southern California PGA Junior Championship held at the Southern California PGA Course in Beaumont, Calif.

Hasbrouck, 14, finished third in the tournament overall. She shot scores of74-77 for the two-day tournament.

Next on the agenda for Hasbrouck will be coming a member of the Aliso Niguel High School girls’ golf team, where she is expected to play in the number one spot.

The team, with Hasbrouck’s addition, is expected to be a strong contender for the state championship in the fall.

She will team up with girls from Taiwan, Japan and South Africa to compete in the 5A competition.

JOHNSON WINS SCRATCH TOUR EVENT – LAPLACE – Gavin Johnson shot a 2-under par 142 to win the Louisiana Scratch Tour event at Riverlands Country Club last weekend.

Todd Lusk of Baton Rouge was five strokes back at 3-over 147. Johnson,who had rounds of 70 and 72 at Riverlands, currently leads the points race on the tour.

Sid Harp of Donaldsonville shot a final round 4-under par 68 to win the senior title. Harp finished with a 1-under par 143, defeating Dick Johnson of NewOrleans by four strokes.
