All-Stars win state

LULING – Fireworks were set off after the championship game of the Dixie Boys Super 10 state tournament Thursday night at the West Bank Bridge Park.

But the St. Charles Parish District 3 East All-Stars provided fireworksduring the game, defeating Mamou, 13-2, and capping a run back from a defeat earlier in the tournament.

St. Charles-East now advances to the Dixie World Series in Marshall,Texas, beginning Aug. 14.Both Mamou and St. Charles had lost to Bossier City earlier in thetournament. Mamou lost in the opener, 20-5, but came back to defeatBossier City twice, 8-6, Tuesday, and 6-1, Wednesday. St. Charles fell inthe second game, 13-7, but came back with wins over Alexandria (15-7) and West Monroe (8-5).

There would be no need for a comeback for St. Charles Thursday night. TreyWatkins opened the game with a double down the third baseline. One outlater, Damaris Johnson walked and both runners moved up on a wild pitch.

Joey Weber followed with a single to shortstop, scoring Watkins. Johnsonalso scored on a throwing error for a 2-0 lead. Weber, who had gone tosecond on the play, went to third on a wild pitch and scored on a throwing error by the catcher, making it 3-0.

After Matt McCune retired the side in order in the bottom of the inning, a walk and an error on a sacrifice by Ross Terranova put runners at first and second with one out. Watkins followed with a run-scoring single to center,making it 4-0. Terranova and Watkins scored as Ronny Weber lined a tripleto right field. Weber would score on Johnson’s sacrifice fly to center,giving St. Charles a 7-0 lead.Thomas Vidrine, who hit in every game for Mamou, led off the second with a single to left but was thrown out at third. A walk by Corey Guillory and asingle by Keith Manuel put runners at second and third with two outs but McCune came back to get Allen Noel to ground out to short to end the inning.

St. Charles added two more in the third. With one out, Ryan Steib singledto second and scored on Chance Price’s double to right field. Price went tothird on the throw in and scored on Jordan Martin’s sacrifice, making it 9- 0.

Mamou got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the third. Robert Vidrineopened the inning with a single to short and stole second. With two outs,Josh Morales singled to left-center, scoring Vidrine. Thomas Vidrine, JedDupuis and Guillory followed with singles, plating Morales to make it 9-2.

McCune then got Manuel to ground out to third to end the inning.

McCune got defensive gems behind him in the fourth and fifth innings. Noelreached on an error and Robert Vidrine walked to open the fourth. But Noelwas out at third on a strong relay throw by Johnson trying to advance on Chase Guillory’s fly ball to right. Watkins made a diving catch on Morales’sinking liner to center to open the fifth inning.

St. Charles had gotten a run in the top of the inning as McCune and TaylorPizzaloto opened the innings with walks and executed a double steal.

McCune then came in with two outs on an errant pickoff throw.

Martin opened the top of the sixth by getting hit by a pitch. One out later,Joey Weber scored Martin with a double to center. Brian Young reached onan error, scoring Weber, and came in to score on Steib’s single to left, making it 13-2.

Watkins came in to pitch the sixth, allowing just a walk before getting Guillory to ground out to end the game.
