Lutcher names McNamara head basketball coach

LUTCHER – Lutcher hired a coach familiar to the River Parishes as its head boys’ basketball coach recently.

Mike McNamara, who coached at Destrehan from 1997-2000, takes over the top spot. McNamara went 9-18 with the Wildcats this past season. McNamara succeeds Don Fernandez who left to return to St. CharlesCatholic. Fernandez led the Bulldogs to an 18-11 record in 1999-2000,losing to St. Bernard, 81-66, in the Class 3A bi-district playoffs. St. Bernard went on to lose to St. James, Lutcher’s District 9-3A rival, inthe state championship game.

“It’s an incredibly tough district with the defending state champion in it,” McNamara said. “I’m looking forward to a new start.”McNamara will serve as an assistant for another sport as well and will teach physical education and world geography.
