St. Charles sheriff, clerk of court sworn into office

HAHNVILLE – St. Charles Parish Sheriff Greg C. Champagne officially startedhis second term of office at ceremonies Friday.
Champagne who, it was noted, is the first St. Charles sheriff to be returnedto office without opposition in more than a century, credited his deputies and family for making it possible.
Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals Judge Edward A. Dufresne Jr. performed theswearing-in for Champagne and, in brief remarks, credited him with the steady decrease in local crime and the construction of the new correctional center.
“We always have to look to improve every day,” Champagne told the overflow crowd in the parish council chamber. “This is a good parish to live in and itcan only get better.
A brief reception followed in the conference room of the sheriff’s office on the third floor.
Among those officials in attendance were 29th Judicial District Attorney Harry Morel Jr., District Judge Robert Chaisson, Rep. Gary Smith, AssessorClyde “Rock” Gisclair, Councilman Lance Marino, School Board member Ronald St. Pierre, Constable Gil Schmidt, Constable Gary Cazenave, Justice of thePeace L.K. Frickey, school Superintendent Dr. Rodney Lafon and Clerk ofCourt Charles Oubre Jr.
The sheriff’s inauguration was preceded at noon Friday of the swearing-in of Oubre to his fifth term of office, along with his deputy clerks, in the main courtroom of the parish courthouse. It was conducted by Judge Chaisson.Gisclair, likewise re-elected last fall, won’t be inaugurated into his next term of office until January 2001. He has served for the past 28 years as parishassessor.
