Riverside takes slugfest

RESERVE – Five Riverside Extra Inning Club batters had two or more hits as the Rebels out-slugged Allstate Insurance, 14-9, at Fernandez Field Monday afternoon.

The Extra Inning Club improved to 6-5 overall and in Second District play.

Hannan-based Allstate Insurance fell to 8-5 overall and 8-3 in district.

Bradley Hodges led the way for the Extra Inning Club, going 3-for-4 and scoring four times. Brandon Delaneuville went 2-for-3, was hit twice anddrove in four runs. D.J. Fortenberry also drove in four runs in going 2-for-3. Britt Waguespack was 3-for-4, scored three times and drove in twomore runs. Damian Melancon drove in two more runs in going 2-for-2. TheExtra Inning Club finished with 14 hits.

“We had been struggling at the plate,” Extra Inning Club coach Davey Clement said. “We finally started hitting the ball.”Hannan was led by Danny Dorcey who went 3-for-4 with three runs scored.

Tommy Manzella was 2-for-5 with two runs scored.

Scott Poirrier (1-0) got the win for the Extra Inning Club, giving up six earned runs on seven hits, four walks and four strikeouts in 4 2/3 innings.

Jordan Remondet came in for the final 1 1/3 innings, giving up one hit while striking out two in picking up the save.

“Jordan had been impressive early in Metro so he’s getting his shot,” Clement said. “This was his second good performance in Legion. He gotthem out and that’s what he had to do.”Gregg Felger took the loss for Hannan after giving up eight earned runs on seven hits and three walks while striking out two in two innings of work.

Hannan jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first. Jason Schwabwalked to lead off the inning, went to third on Dorcey’s double to left and scored on Felger’s fly ball to left. Dorcey came in to score on DarylRicard’s two-out single to left.

The Extra Inning Club came right back in the bottom of the inning. Hodgesreached as Felger threw high to first on a chopper back to the mound. Singles by Waguespackand Sean Delaneuville loaded the bases.

Brandon Delaneuville was hit by a pitch to drive in Hodges and an out later, Melancon walked to force in Waguespack. Fortenberry then drove a two-runsingle to left, making it 4-2.

Dexter Falgoust saved a run in the second with a diving grab of a liner by Patrick Vigueira with two outs and a man on third.

The Extra Inning Club added five runs in the second. Falgoust andWaguespack walked and Hodges singled to center to load the bases with none out. Brandon Delaneuville was again hit by a pitch to score Falgoust.With two outs, Melancon singled to left for an RBI and Fortenberry followed with a two-run double to right for an 8-2 lead. Poirrier had a single to left, making it 9-2.

Hodges singled off Ricard, who had come in to pitch, to open the third and was forced at second by Waguespack. Sean Delaneuville then walked andafter a double steal, Brandon Delaneuville drove in two runs with a single to left, giving the Extra Inning Club a 11-2 lead.

Allstate got a run in the fourth as Ricard walked and came around to score two outs later as Vigueira reached on an error.

The Extra Inning Club came back with two more in the bottom of the inning. With one out, Falgoust and Hodges walked and Waguespack hit acheck-swing single over short for a run. Hodges would come in on a wildpitch to make it 13-3.

Allstate avoided being 10-run ruled with four runs in the fifth. A walk byDorcey and doubles by Manzella and Felger opened the inning. Manzellacame in on a wild pitch and Matt Nuccio drove in another with a single to left.

After Matt Frantatorch singled with two outs, Ryan Bugay came in to pitch and gave up a run-scoring single to Vigueira before getting Schwab to ground out to first to end the inning.

Allstate pulled to within 13-9 in the sixth. Dorcey led off with a single tocenter, went to third on Manzella’s double to right and scored on a wild pitch. Manzella would score an out later on Ricard’s ground out to second.Allstate loaded the bases on walks by Nuccio and Frantatorch and a single by Chris Zerr before Remondet came in and struck out pinch-hitter Ryan Starr to end the inning.

The Extra Inning Club added a run in the sixth on doubles to left by Hodges and Waguespack to open the inning.
