Owens, Strickland lead Post 366/195

DESTREHAN – Reid Owens’ double in the bottom of the sixth knocked in Donnie Hollis with the eventual winning run as East St. Charles Post366/195 defeated Otto Candies, 9-7, in Second District play Saturday afternoon.

Post 366/195 improved to 4-6 in district play and 4-7 overall with the win. Otto Candies fell to 3-6 overall and in district.Jared Strickland pitched a scoreless 2 1/3 innings to pick up the win in relief of Post 366/195 starter Scott Simon. Strickland (2-1) gave upthree hits and a walk while striking out two.

Matt Caire (1-2) took the loss for Otto Candies in relief of Brandon Casanova.

Larry McVay led the Post 366/195 offensive attack with two hits and a walk in five plate appearances. Second baseman Marty Boudreaux added asolo home run in the first.

Joey Bourgeois went 3-for-4 for Otto Candies and scored twice. JarredFarrell went 2-for-4 with three RBIs while Tim Sirmon had a solo home run in the third.

With the game tied at 7, Hollis led off the sixth with a walk off Caire and advanced to second on a wild pitch as Owens attempted a bunt. Owensdrove a double down the right field line, scoring Hollis to give Post 366/195 the lead. After Caire came back to strike out Rustin Rebowe andDanny Luquet, pinch hitter Daniel Roussel dropped a single to right, plating Owens to make it 9-7.

Otto Candies threatened in the seventh as Bourgeois led off with a single to short and stole second. After Strickland retired the next two batters,Ryan Burke kept the game alive with a single to left. But Strickland thencame back to strike out Ryan Chiasson to end the game.

Otto Candies also put a rally together in the sixth as eighth-grader Jordan Brown lined a double off the top of the fence in left-center and Sirmon walked with two outs. Strickland got Caire to pop up to second to end thethreat.

“Strickland came in and threw well,” Post 366/195 coach Mark Willoughby said. “He threw strikes and put it on their shoulders. It was a goodperformance on his part. The younger guys put the ball in play when theyhad to. They are the guys who need this experience because they are goingto have to produce.”Post 366/195 tied the game at 7 in the bottom of the fifth. With one out,McVay singled to right and went to third on errors by Lee Tregre in right and Burke in center. McVay then came in to score on a suicide squeeze byBoudreaux. Randy Roth followed with a double over second base but Cairekept him stranded by striking out Larry Matherne.

Otto Candies had overcome a 6-4 deficit to take a 7-6 lead in the top of the inning. Tregre led off with a single against Simon and Sirmon followedwith a walk. Keith Grubbs came in to pitch and retired Caire on a fly ballto left. Bourgeois reached on a fielder’s choice and Farrell singled to left,scoring Tregre and Sirmon to tie the game.

After a walk by Josh Adams, Strickland came in to relieve Grubbs. Burkegreeted him with a fly ball to right with Bourgeois scoring from third.

Adams was out at second trying to advance to end the inning.

Post 366/195 took the 6-4 lead in the fourth. McVay led off with a walkfrom Caire. Following a walk by Boudreaux, Roth hit into a force out atsecond, sending McVay to third. Roth and McVay then executed a doublesteal with McVay beating the throw home.

After Roth went to third on the play, Matherne walked and Grubbs, courtesy running, stole second. An out later, Owens and Rebowe drewwalks, forcing in Roth to give Post 366/195 the lead at 6-4.

Otto Candies jumped out to a 3-0 lead with a two-out rally in the top of the first. Caire started the rally with a walk and Bourgeois followed witha single to left. Farrell then drove a single to center, scoring Caire.Bourgeois came in to score on Matherne’s overthrow as Farrell took second. Farrell would score the third run of the inning on consecutive wildpitches by Simon.

Post 366/195 answered in the bottom half of the inning. With one out,Boudreaux drove a Casanova pitch over the right field wall to cut the deficit to 3-1. An out later, Matherne and Owens were hit by pitches andHollis reached on an error to load the bases. A walk by Rebowe forced inGrubbs courtesy running to make it 3-2. Luquet then drove a single toright, plating Hollis and Owens for a 4-3 lead.

Sirmon tied the game in the third inning with a one-out home run to right field. Caire followed with a walk and Bourgeois singled but Simon got thenext two batters to end the inning.
