Industry workshop set for Saturday to help job seekers

LAPLACE – St. John Parish wants to make sure you get the job you want.With that goal in mind, the St. John Economic Development Department,the LaPlace Job Center and the River Parishes Technical College are sponsoring the St. John Parish Industrial Information Workshop Saturdayat the River Parishes Technical College in Reserve from 8 a.m to 2:30 p.m.The workshop is designed to help St. John residents get jobs within theparish.

To help out, seven of the biggest employers in the parish will have representatives at the workshop. Bayou Steel, Cargill Inc. Dupont, DupontDow Elastomers, Marathon Ashland Petroleum, Nalco and Stockhausen will participate in the workshop. During a panel discussion, representativesfrom these companies will tell what is expected of potential employees and what is involved in their hiring process.

Julia Remondet, director of the St. John Economic DevelopmentDepartment, said, “We want to make sure that the people of the parish know how the employment process works.”There will also be workshops on writing resumes and job interviews and what the potential employee needs to do to get a job.

“We want to show them how to put their best foot forward,” said Remondet.

Mary Lynn Alltmont, manager of the LaPlace Job Service, said the workshop is open to all residents of the parish, including graduates.

However, because of the limited seating, Alltmont said that pre- registration is required.

If you are interested in attending the workshop call Angel Aycock at the LaPlace Job Center at 652-3471 to register. Registration is on a first-come, first-serve basis, so Alltmont suggests people call as soon as possible to reserve a seat.
