Reds select Williams

LAPLACE – Roydell Williams joined a long line of East St. John High Schoolplayers drafted by the Major Leagues Monday, going to the Cincinnati Reds in the fifth round in the First-Year Player Draft.
Williams went with the 153rd pick overall. He was the fifth player fromLouisiana taken. LSU’s Brian Tallet was taken by Cleveland in the secondround. Mark Peterson of Rapides High School also went in the second roundto the New York Mets. Mewelde Moore, like Williams a Tulane Universityfootball signee, was selected by San Diego in the fourth round. And BrandonWilson of Christian Life Academy, an LSU baseball signee, was taken by the Mets in the fourth round.
Williams, an all-District 7-5A selection as a center fielder, batted .468 with19 stolen bases, 23 RBIs and 30 runs scored in his senior season.
Like former Wildcat teammate Thomas Pittman, Williams has a decision to make. He signed to play football with Tulane in February after an all-Statecareer at East St. John.
