GRETNA – If you need a good, comforting, educational and Louisiana-based children’s book, you can do little better than “When the Rain Came Down in Bayou Town!” written by Cherie Schadler, illustrated by Ann Biedenharn Jones and published by Pelican Publishing.

It’s also a fun read, considering the current drought.

Schadler’s story takes place in a little bayou village, where the alligators and beaver play and every neighbor cares for each other.

The Boudreaux family had a roof leak as the rainy season begins and the neighbors hear about it and pitch in to help repair the roof. The job turns intoa proper fais-do-do, with food, families and good fellowship, and the roof work is quickly done.

However, a crisis develops when the children notice the beavers’ mound is in trouble. Nobody knows what to do until suddenly Alfons the Alligator pitchesin and repairs the hole.

The result is a rescue for the beavers, the making of a hero and a good time had by all.

The Christian-founded storyline reflects on the Gospels of John and Mark and the teachings by Jesus to love one another.

This is Cherie Schadler’s second book, the first being “Welcome to Bayou Town!” She also tours with Bayou Town Musical Puppet Theater. She is a NewOrleans native and presents her children’s story with ease, knowledge and Christian wisdom.

Priced at $14.95, “When the Rain Came Down in Bayou Town!” is available atmajor bookstores. Her first book is also available in audiocassette.
