Locals named to academic team

BATON ROUGE – The Louisiana High School Athletic Association has released its fourth annual Academic All-State baseball team for each of the seven classes of competition along with an Academic All-State Composite team.

River Parishes schools placed nine athletes on the respective honorable mention district teams. Selected were Michael Catalano and JeffreyVitrano of Destrehan in Class 5A; Jeremy Martin, Scott Ocmond, Terry Millet and Lane Vicknair of Lutcher and Nicholas Monica and Jonathan Juneau of St. Charles Catholic in Class 3A; and Riverside’s Seth LeBlanc inClass 2A.

Catalano, a third baseman, compiled a 3.6727 grade point average. Vitrano,a shortstop, had a 3.5178 GPA.Vicknair, a second baseman, had a 3.0870 GPA. Martin, a third baseman,achieved a 3.4375 GPA. In the outfield, Ocmond had a 3.2609 GPA whileMillet had a 3.1600 GPA.Monica, a second baseman, achieved a 3.2857 GPA. Juneau, also a secondbaseman, had a 3.1636 GPA. LeBlanc, an outfielder, achieved a 3.0790 GPA.This year, 32 senior baseball players who also excelled in the classroom were selected to represent their respective schools on the Composite team. There were a total of 314 nominees. The members of the AcademicAll-State Composite team will be honored during the playing of the All- Star baseball doubleheader at Bringhurst Park in Alexandria today.

In order to be selected to the Academic All-State team, the student had to be nominated by both the school principal and the baseball coach and had to have achieved a seven-semester cumulative grade-point average of at least 3.0 or better based on a 4.0 scale. In each class and on the Compositeteam, two individuals were selected for each of the nine positions on the team (six outfielders). In the case of ties, all the students involved in thetie in determining the GPA were selected to the team.
