Race for Piccadilly Cup complete

BATON ROUGE – With the results of all 23 sports offered by the Louisiana High School Athletic Association now in, the race for the 2000 Piccadilly Cup is complete. There are several new faces as well as some repeat winners.For the third year in a row, Newman captured the Class 2A Piccadilly Cup and Episcopal of Acadiana duplicated the feat in Class B. Parkview Baptistbecame a two-time winner in Class 3A while Baton Rouge High won its third straight but its first in Class 5A. First time winners include St. Martin’s inClass 1A, Epps in Class C and St. Thomas More in Class 4A.Among local schools, Lutcher led the way with 125 points in Class 3A behind a state championship by its boys’ swim team, a second-place finish in boys’ track, a third-place finish by the girls’ swim team and a semifinal appearance in softball.

West St. John had 75 points in Class 2A with a state championship in boys’basketball and a semifinal appearance in football. Riverside, with a statechampionship in boys’ golf, had 60 points in Class 2A. St. James, with a statetitle in boys’ basketball, also had 60 points in Class 3A.

St. Charles Catholic, behind a second place finish in boys’ swimming and asemifinal appearance in volleyball, had 45 points in Class 3A. ReserveChristian, with a semifinal appearance in boys’ basketball, had 15 points.

Of the 411 LHSAA member schools, 185 earned points by finishing in the top four places in at least one sport.

“I want to salute all our schools in their respective classes for competing in the Piccadilly Cup race in such a spirited manner this school year,” commissioner Tommy Henry said. “It is obvious the Piccadilly Cup hasmotivated our schools to emphasize an all-around sports program and has generated tremendous interest in LHSAA schools throughout Louisiana.”The Piccadilly Cup recognizes the top overall athletic programs in each class.

Champions in each sport receive 60 points, runners-up 30, third-place finishers 20 and fourth-place finishers 10. In sports with undetermined thirdand fourth place finishers, 15 points are awarded to each non-advancing semifinalist.

The cups are rotating awards and the 1999 winners will relinquish them so they be presented to the 2000 recipients at the beginning of the upcoming school year.
