Duhon named constable; awaits court approval

LAPLACE – If the Louisiana State Supreme Court accepts the St. John theBaptist Parish Council’s recommendation, District 2 will have a new constable.

At last week’s council meeting, Councilmen Allen St. Pierre and ClevelandFarlough informed the council that District 2 Constable Andrew Murray was retiring before he finished his term in office.

St. Pierre recommended to the council that Brent Duhon be appointed to fillin for the rest of Murray’s term. Duhon addressed the council and said hewas a lifelong resident of District 2 and a neighbor of Murray.

Farlough also thanked Murray for all his years of work put in as constable.

The council unanimously approved the recommendation and it now goes to the State Supreme Court for final approval.

In other council business: Lester Rainey gave a plaque to the West St. John High School basketballteam for winning the Class 2A state championship.

The council gave permission for the administration to purchase drainage equipment using funds from the Mosquito Abatement Account.

The administration was also given the go-ahead to hire a grant writer for the CASA program and also to sign a lease for $1,500 a month for rental of land and trailer to the Jail Training Partnership Act.

Parish President Nickie Monica and St. Pierre got a resolution passed thatlet St. John Parish accept ownership of Louisiana Highway 54.Council Chairman Duaine Duffy saw his resolution pass which will ask the Department of Transportation and Development and the Department of Forestry to plant a sound buffer along Interstate 10 between Vicknair Canal and U.S. Highway 51.Duffy appointed Nancy Desselle to the Animal Control Advisory Board.

Lester Rainey got the council to recognize the Sorapuru House designation in the National Register of Historical Places.

L’Observateur’s official journal contract renewal with St. John Parish forthe year 2000-2001 was approved.
