Locals named academic all-state

BATON ROUGE – Five River Parishes athletes were selected to the LHSAA Academic All-State boys’ and girls’ basketball first teams announced recently.
Hahnville’s Micah Stewart, St. Charles Catholic’s Adam Gros and West St.John’s Tremaine Nathan and Carl Gauthier were named to the boys’ basketball team in their respective classes. Hahnville’s Karen Bass wasselected to the Class 5A girls’ basketball team.
Stewart, a guard, compiled a 3.9772 grade point average for the Tigers.Gros, a center, had a 3.1190 GPA. Gauthier, a guard, had a 3.9047 GPA.Nathan, a forward, had a 3.7140 GPA.Bass, a guard, compiled a 3.9523 GPA.Named to the boys’ basketball honorable mention in Class 3A was St. CharlesCatholic guard Nick Monica. Monica had a 3.2857 GPA.Reserve Christian had two players named to the Class B honorable mention team. Jared Simoneaux, a forward, had a 3.9000 GPA. Guard Aaron Vogelhad a 3.8500 GPA.Making the Class 5A honorable mention team for the girls was Yoshiko Taylor of East St. John. Taylor, a guard, had a 3.4166 GPA.Named to the Class 3A honorable mention team were Marci Martin, Abby Howard, Elizabeth Dufresne and Nicole Scontrino of St. Charles Catholic,Ashton Grant of St. James and Tiffany Griffin of Lutcher. Martin, a forward,had a 3.5000 GPA. Howard, also a forward, had a 3.4545 GPA. Dufresne, aguard, had a 3.2857 GPA. Scontrino, also a guard, compiled a 3.1363 GPA.Grant, a forward, had a 3.5348 GPA. Griffin, another forward, had a 3.2083GPA.
Jennifer Guidry of Riverside was named to the Class 2A honorable mention team as a guard with a 3.5683 GPA.This is the fourteenth year that the LHSAA has compiled an Academic All- State basketball team. In order to be selected to the Academic All-Stateteam, the nominee must have been selected as an all-district player for the 1999-2000 season. Each school principal was allowed to nominate amaximum of two players who were not all-district selections. The nomineemust have been a senior student with a three-year accumulative grade point average of 3.0 or better based on a 4.0 scale.The composition in each class and on the composite team consists of three selections per position (two guards, one center and two forwards) for a total of at least 15 players per squad. Ties were not broken. This year, 303 seniorgirls’ basketball players are being honored with 41 making the composite team. For boys’ basketball, 217 senior boys were honored with 30 makingthe composite team.
