ESJ toasts track teams at banquet

RESERVE – East St. John held its track and field banquet Thursday, May 4,honoring its District 7-5A champion boys’ and girls’ track teams. TheWildcats went on to place third at the Regional 2-5A meet while the Lady Cats placed fourth.

It was the first time in school history that both the boys’ and girls’ teams won district titles in the same season. Louis Holloway was the boys’ District7-5A Coach of the Year while David Guillot was the girls’ District 7-5A Coach of the Year.

Raynell Joseph, a member of the Wildcats’ regional champion 800- and 400- meter relay teams, was selected as the team’s Most Valuable Player. ChrisBush, the Class 5A state champion in the long jump, was named the Outstanding Field Performer. Bush was also the district triple jump andjavelin champion and the regional champion in both the long jump and the triple jump.

Cornell Watkins, also a member of the regional champion relay teams, was named the Outstanding Track Performer. The Wildcat Award went to a thirdmember of those relay teams, Corey Bryant. And a fourth member of the800-meter relay team, Michael Ridley, was named the Most Improved. Boththe 400- and 800-meter teams also won the district championship.

For the girls, Melissa Ledet was named the MVP. Ledet was second atregionals in both the long jump and triple jump and was third in the 100- meter hurdles. She was the District 7-5A champion in the long jump and wassecond in both the triple jump and the hurdles. She placed fourth at state inthe triple jump.

The Most Improved Award went to Natalie Hargrove, who placed third in the regionals in the 400 meters. She was also the District 7-5A champion in theevent. Lakenjie Patterson, the district 100-meter champion, was theOutstanding Track Performer. Patterson also placed second in the 200 atdistrict.

Courtney Drayton, the district champion in the javelin, was named the Outstanding Field Performer. Drayton went on to qualify for state with asecond-place finish at regionals.

Anastasia Deloney was awarded the Wildcat Award.

The team’s all-state, all-regional and all-district honorees were also recognized.
