WSJ honors teams, players at banquet

EDGARD – West St. John celebrated another successful athletic year at itsannual Athletic Banquet Monday night in the school cafeteria.

West St. John honored its Class 2 state champion basketball team at thebanquet as well as athletes from all sports.

Ireon Bethancourt and Tremaine Nathan were the recipients of the Anthony Miller Award, given to the outstanding senior athletes who played two or more sports and achieved at least a 2.5 grade point average. Bethancourtplayed volleyball, softball, basketball and track during her career with the Lady Rams while Nathan participated in football, basketball and track.

Bethancourt and Nathan also received the Scholastic Award along with Carl Gauthier. Bethancourt achieved a 3.71 GPA while Nathan had a 4.28 GPA.Gauthier achieved a 4.47 GPA and earned a number of honors this pastseason. He was the recipient of the Patrick Taylor award, was an A+ Studenton WWL-TV and a Metro Player of the Week and will represent West St. Johnat the Chamber of Commerce banquet. He was also the St. John Parish highschool Student of the Year and was named the team captain of the football team. In addition, Gauthier has been selected to play in the Louisiana HighSchool Coaches Association’s all-star football game scheduled for July 21 at LSU’s Tiger Stadium.

Gauthier was also selected as the best offensive player on the football team and received the team’s Most Valuable Attitude award. Brian Lumar wasnamed the best defensive player while Coy Miller received the RAM Award.

Nathan was also chosen as the team’s most improved player.

In volleyball, Kimiko Gauthier received the Most Valuable Attitude award from coach Germaine Roussel.

In girls’ basketball, Bethancourt received an award for being the team’s leading scorer while Janell Morris received one as the leading rebounder.

Oneka Lewis, who went to the Class 2A state track and field meet in the shot put, was honored as the outstanding field performer in girls’ track. DonavonPierre, who also went to state in the high jump, received the award in boys’ track. Arlando Comminie, who placed third in the hurdles at state, was namedthe outstanding track performer. Nathan received the Most ValuableAttitude award in the sport.

In baseball, Cody Francis received the Coaches Award while Tristan Sylvain was the recipient of the RAM Award. Jerome Isom was named the team’sbest all-around player while Jason Isom was selected as the best newcomer.

Darnell Fleming received an award for compiling the team’s highest batting average and was also recognized for being selected to the all-District 9-2A first team.

In junior varsity boys’ basketball, the Most Valuable Attitude award went to Kermit Bethancourt.

In addition to the state championship, the boys’ basketball team of Brian Lumar, Jeremy Lumar, Dwayne Bastain, Donriel Louis, Marlon Jackson, Gauthier, Nathan, Amone Lumar, Miller, Lionel Howard, Kermit Bethancourt, Davin Farnell and Devin Herbert as well as head coach Antoine Edwards and assistant coach Lennix Madere was recognized for winning three straight district championships.

Gauthier received the team’s Coaches Award while Nathan received the Most Valuable Attitude award. The award for best defender went to MarlonJackson while Louis received it for best offensive player. Jeremy Lumarreceived the RAM Award.

Senior plaques were given to the seniors in each sport. The teams alsorecognized those who helped out during the year, including the bus drivers, faculty members who worked football games and track meets and the cooks chain crews at the football games.

It was also announced that the ring ceremony honoring the basketball team will be held at the school Monday, May 22.
