Bulldogs take second at state

BATON ROUGE – Jerron Wishom was a busy man at the LHSAA Class 3A track and field meet Saturday at LSU’s Bernie Moore Track Stadium.
Wishom placed second in the long jump, third in the hurdles and helped the 4×400 relay team to a state title.
Wishom’s performance helped the Bulldogs finish second with 49 points.
Defending champion Lake Charles-Boston rallied in the track events to capture its second straight title with 73 points. Benton was third with 46points, followed by E.D. White with 46 and Winnsboro with 38. Wishom overcame a slow start to place second in the long jump with a jump of 23 feet, 2.25 inches. It was his best jump of the year. Winnsboro JohnMoffitt captured the state title with a jump of 24-0.25. “I started off bad,” Wishom said. “I had pressure on me. I knew I had to comethrough for the team.”Wishom came through again in the hurdles, crossing the line in 14.71 secondsto wrap up third place. West Feliciana’s Bryan Cobb crossed the line first in14.50, followed by Lake Charles-Boston’s Henry Frazier in 14.58. RicardoWilliams of Lutcher was fifth in 15.08.”Wishom has carried us all the way from district to regionals,” Lutcher head coach Chris Barrient said. “He’s a winner, a true winner.”Wishom capped off his day by jump starting the Bulldogs’ state championship winning 4×400 team. David Pittman, Lance Allen and Chris Johnson finishedoff the win for the Bulldogs in 3:23.56, ahead of Breaux Bridge’s 3:24.44.The mark was a season best for the Bulldogs and three seconds faster than their time at regionals.
“That was a good end to our season right there,” Barrient said.
The day opened with Lutcher’s William Adams, who placed third last year, taking second in the javelin with a throw of 189-11. Teammate T.R. Ricks,last year’s champion, was fourth with a throw of 172-4. E.D. White’s J.J.Tabor came in first with a throw of 201-3 with Westlake’s Zeke Dixon third with his throw of 184-5.
Lutcher’s Ben Dicharry took fifth in the shot put with a throw of 46-10.75.Benton’s Greg Doughty was first with a throw of 56-9, followed by teammate Clymane Lawrence with a throw of 50-9.5.Dicharry also took seventh in the discus with a throw of 126-11. Doughtywon his second state championship with a throw of 188-6, a Class 3A record.
The old mark was set by Winnfield’s John Nicholas in 1986.
Jeremy Foreman of Lutcher cleared the bar at 6-4 to place fifth in the high jump. Donaldsonville’s Mike McKinny cleared 6-8 to win the event, edging outBenton’s Jarvis Smith who also cleared 6-8. Robert Payne of Port Allen andE.D. White’s Josh Morvant also cleared 6-4.Lutcher’s Clarence Weber added a fourth-place finish in the triple jump with a jump of 45-0.5. Moffitt captured his second title with a jump of 47-6. LakeCharles Boston’s Corey Goodwin was second with a jump of 46-4, followed by Donaldsonville’s Ronnie Jarvis with a jump of 45-2.75.St. James’ Ross Becnel tied for third in the pole vault with a vault of 12-6.Buckeye’s John Ryland cleared the bar at 14-0 to win the state title. JordanBuller of Westlake was second with a vault of 13-6. West Feliciana’sJonathan Carter and E.D. White’s Ross Hebert also cleared 12-6 to tieBecnel.
In the track events, Lutcher’s Kenneth Johnson, despite running with a pulled hamstring, placed sixth in the 100 meters. Johnson crossed the line in11.18. Lake Charles-Boston’s Darrius Joseph finished first in 10.77.Pittman came in fifth in the 400 in 49.84. E.D. White’s Jon Shanklin won thestate title in 48.23. Breaux Bridge’s Andrew Thibodeaux was second in48.52, followed by Moffitt in 48.89. Karlton Barbarin of Booker T.Washington (N.O.) was fourth in 49.12.Moffitt was selected as the meet’s Outstanding Performer.
In the girls’ competition, Lake Charles-Boston completed the sweep with 56 points. Iowa, behind Outstanding Performer Jackie John, was second with 44points. Notre Dame, with 42 points, was third, with Port Allen (34) fourthand Karr (32) fifth. Lutcher came in 29th place with three points with St.James 30th with two points.
Keondra Robertson got two of the Lady Bulldogs’ points with a fifth-place finish in the 400 meters, finishing in 1:01.14. Karr’s Natasha Brown finishedfirst in 57.45, followed by Pointe Coupee Central’s Latoya Johnson in 58.78.West Feliciana’s Aishena Wright came in third in 59.87 with Quiana Jones ofMansfield fourth in 1:01.13.Tiffany Griffin of Lutcher added a sixth place finish in the javelin with a throw of 112-5. Benton’s Rachel Walker won the event with a compositerecord throw of 153.02. The old composite record of 150-4 was set byAcadiana’s Detrina White in 1998.
St. James’ Ashton Grant was fifth in the discus with a throw of 90-0. MandyMcCullough of Benton had a throw of 114-9 to win the event.
In the first pole vault competition, Lutcher’s Jenny Detillier came in eighth with a vault of 7-6. Parkview Baptist’s Kate Ripple won the event with a vaultof 9-4.
Cristin Clement of St. Charles Catholic was eighth in the long jump with ajump of 15-8.75. Clarissa Johnson of Notre Dame was first with a jump of18-2.5. John won the 800, 1,600 and 3,200 in earning top honors.
