Hymel leads local qualifiers

EDGARD – Riverside’s Richie Hymel took first place in the high jump to lead the list of River Parishes’ state qualifiers at the Region 3-2A Meet Wednesday afternoon at West St. John.Episcopal of Baton Rouge took the regional title with 124 points. St. ThomasAquinas was second with 82 points, followed by Clinton with 75 and Northeast with 44. Riverside tied Newman for fifth with 33 points, followedby West St. John with 27 points.In the girls’ competition, Jewel Sumner pulled away for the title with 98 points. Episcopal was second with 81 points and Christian Life third with 69.Riverside placed eighth with 24 points while West St. John was 14th with sixpoints.
Hymel, who had won the District 9-2A high jump title at West St. John lastweek with a school record jump of six feet, 8.25 inches, cleared the bar at 6-4 to win Wednesday. Raymond Mason of Christian Life was second at 6-2 withWest St. John’s Donovan Pierre third at the same height.West St. John’s Arlando Comminie qualified for state in the 110-meterhurdles, placing second with a time of 14.74 seconds. Episcopal’s BrettBolden took the regional title in the event with a time of 14.29 seconds.Riverside’s Bradley Hodges also qualified for state with a third-place time of 22.02 seconds in the 200 meters. He placed first in the first heat of theevent. St. Thomas Aquinas’ Quincy Seaberry took first with a time of 21.73in the second heat.
Hodges also placed fifth in the 100 meters in 11.05 seconds. Ahmad Jasmineof Christian Life was first in 10.36 seconds. Jasmine also won the 400 andwas named the meet’s Outstanding Track Performer.
The West St. John 400-meter relay team qualified for the state meet with atime of 43.40, good for second place behind Clinton’s 42.82.Other River Parishes athletes who finished in the scoring (top six spots) included Riverside’s Jay Bailey who placed fourth in the pole vault with a vault of 9-0. Episcopal’s Brandon Kamus came in first after clearing the bar at 12-6.
West St. John’s Coy Miller was fifth in the discus with a throw of 122-2.Teammate Tremaine Howard was fifth in the javelin with a throw of 160-8 while Lionel Howard was sixth in the long jump with a jump of 20-10.
Riverside’s Ronnie Mason placed sixth in the triple jump with a jump of 41-4.
The Rebels’ Jason Hayes was sixth in the discus with his throw of 117-7.
John Champagne was fifth in the shot put with a throw of 45-5.5 withteammate Joseph Trosclair right behind with a throw of 44-9. ChristianLife’s Terrell Browden won the event in being named the Outstanding Field Performer.
In the track events, Hymel came in sixth in the hurdles in 16.39. MichaelSparcella placed sixth in the 800 in 2:12.48 while the Rebels’ 800-meterrelay team placed fourth in 1:32.73.In the girls’ competition, Riverside’s Kelly Louque qualified for state with a second-place throw of 96-2 in the javelin. Lisanne Meiners of University wonthe event with a throw of 118-10. Riverside’s Nicole Lambert placed sixthwith her throw of 91-7.
Riverside’s Jennifer Guidry also qualified in the hurdles, placing third with a time of 17.61. Sumner’s Ashley Brandon won in a time of 15.62.West St. John’s Oneka Lewis qualified in the shot put with a third place throwof 32-11. Clinton’s Silver Fultz took first with her throw of 40-11.Other locals finishing in the scoring included Heather Mintz who placed fifth in the pole vault with a vault of 6-3. Episcopal’s Robin Young cleared 10-0 to winthe regional title.
Brandy Falgoust of Riverside was fifth in the discus with her throw of 88-9.
Sumner’s Lisa Miller came in first with her throw of 106-9.5. And theRiverside 400-meter relay team placed fifth in 53.85.Roshetta Baker of St. Helena won the long jump and the triple jump in beingnamed the Outstanding Field Performer. Baker also placed first in the 400.Christian Life’s Shandra Freeman was the Outstanding Track Performer after winning the 100 and the 200.
The top three finishers in each event qualify for the LHSAA Class 2A state track and field meet Thursday at LSU’s Bernie Moore Track Stadium. Fieldevents begin at 12:15 p.m. with track events getting under way at 5 p.m.
