Swamp Eyes conducts spring cleanup

ST. ROSE – Swamp Eyes will conduct its annual spring cleanup of St. RoseAvenue, Louisiana Highway 626, April 8 and 9. Volunteers will recover tires,large appliances, scrap metal and other trash along St. Rose Avenue as faras they can see from the road.
Volunteers will be provided with gloves, trash bags and grappling hooks.
Parking locations are planned alongside St. Rose Avenue, only on the Kennerside of the road. Vehicles must be clear of the pavement and locked.Volunteers will be split into two groups, land and water. The water groupvolunteers, who should supply their own boats, gloves, paddles and life vests, will park at the I-310 crossing of St. Rose Avenue. Land group volunteerspark across from the old rig site, off the road. Both will be shuttled to andfrom the work sites.
Bag lunches will be made available to all volunteers.
Also, St. Charles Parish students are again invited to participate in DEQ’santi-littering calendar. Last year, eight St. Charles Parish students had theirartwork included on the 2000 calendar, and there were 1,228 local entries.
This year’s competition is open to first- through eighth-graders. Entriesmust be done with crayon, markers, pens, color pencils on an 8 1/2-by-11- inch sheet of paper.
On the back of each entry must be the name of the artist, their school, grade and town. Entry information is available both at the schools and at thepublic libraries. The completed entries will be forwarded to DEQ’s LitterReduction and Public Action Section for judging.
Last year’s winners were Amanda Henne of Schoeffner Elementary, Diane Vegas of J.B. Martin Middle, Amanda Mollere of Hurst Middle, Victoria Maikellof Landry Middle, Colin O’Quinn of Hurst Middle, Vanessa Smith f Landry Middle, Lindsay Lenard of Hurst Middle and Erica Boss of Cammon Middle.
Deadline for entries is May 19.
