Rebels hold off Eagles

LAPLACE – For the first time this season, Riverside did not have a golfer score in the 30s but the Rebels were still able to hold off Ridgewood, 161- 173, Thursday afternoon at Riverlands Country Club.
It was the second straight victory for Riverside after the Rebels saw its three-year victory in dual matches come to an end last week against Country Day.
Michael Schoen, Brett Bergeron and Mike Lozano each had 4-over par 40s to lead the Rebels. Steve Luminais added a 5-over 41. Leisl Hasbrouck had a 6-over 42.
Frankie Brisno and Danny Brisno each had the low scores of the round, 2- over par 38s, for the Eagles. Josh Goldman had a 7-over 43 and Joe Holm an18-over 54.
Luminais and Frankie Brisno each started the round with pars on the par 4 first hole. Luminais hit his second shot from 150 yards from the left roughonto the green and two-putted. Brisno’s chipped his third shot to withinthree feet and tapped in for his par. Schoen and Goldman each bogeyed thehole.
Schoen came back to par the par 3 second hole, chipping onto the green with his second shot and rolling in his putt. Luminais bogeyed the hole after twoputting.
Schoen came up with one of the best shots of the round on the par 5 third hole, hitting his second shot from the right rough from 220 yards out to the back of the green. Schoen lagged his putt down hill to within three feet androlled in his birdie putt. Luminais just missed the green with his second shot,landing in the green-side bunker. Luminais blasted out of the trap and twoputted for his par.
Both Schoen and Luminais parred the par 4 fourth after hitting their drives to within 75 feet of the green. Luminais also parred the par 3 fifth whileSchoen bogeyed after three putting.
Schoen got his second birdie of the round on the par 5 sixth. After hitting hissecond shot to the left side of the green pin high from 225 yards out, Schoen just missed chipping in for an eagle, tapping in for the birdie. Luminaisparred the hole while Brisno, who had parred the first five holes, finish with bogey.
Schoen nearly also birdied the par 4 seventh after recovering from an errant drive into the left rough. His chip from the right side of the green went pastthe hole before he tapped in for a par. Luminais double bogeyed the holeafter two putting.
Schoen and Luminais each double bogeyed the par 4 eighth after driving into the right rough. Schoen also double bogeyed the par 4 ninth while Luminaisfinished with a par. Brisno finished with pars on the eighth and ninth. Lozano started slowly, double bogeying the first hole before coming back with birdies on the next two holes after sinking two putts from within 15 feet.
Lozano would double bogey the fourth hole but played solidly after that. Hechipped in from off the side of the green to save par on the seventh hole.
“Mike has been playing play well and consistent lately,” Riverside coach Liz Torres said. “His game has been coming around.”Riverside has one of its biggest matches of the season next Thursday when it hosts Ridgewood and perennial Class 5A power Jesuit at Belle Terre Country Club at 3:30 p.m. The Rebels also play E.D. White Wednesday at BelleTerre beginning at 3:30 p.m.
