The St. Charles Parish Department of Parks and Recreation is holding summer track registration for ages 13-18 (age as of Dec. 31,2000) today at 5 p.m. at the Recreation Department. Parents whose children wish to compete are asked to attend this meeting.

The following is needed to complete registration: certified copy of birth certificate (if not on file); doctor’s physical examination (1999-2000 school year); $25 registration fee; and parent’s or guardian’s signature on permission slip.

Destrehan High School track coach Ulysses Frontha and Nathaniel Henry have volunteered to coach the team. The department is also in need of atrack coach for the West Bank. Practices will be discussed at this meeting.

Meets will be held May 25-28 at Destrehan High School. The Junior AAU Olympic Track Meet will be held in Orlando this year.

The St. Charles Catholic Double Diamond Dance will be held in theschool’s gym, Saturday, from 9 p.m. to 1 a.m. Music will be provided by Bits N’ Pieces. A dinner will be served. There will be a $5,000 grand prize along with a $1,000 cash give-a-way and tremendous door prizes.

The Department of Wildlife and Fisheries Hunter Education Division will be conducting an instructor course March 20-22 at the St. Charles Parish Fraternal Order of Police Building on River Road from 6-10 p.m. each night. The Larayo Mixed League Cabbageball Tournament will be held Saturday, March 25.

The cost is $100 per team. A limited number of teams will be permitted. Participants must be 18 years of age or older. Winners will receive a T-shirt and have the entry fee returned. The St. Charles Catholic High School Varsity Alumni is sponsoring a mixed cabbageball tournament April 30 on the St. Charles Catholiccampus.

LSU baseball players and coaches will conduct instructional clinics through April at the facilities of youth baseball organizations. The clinicsare offered as a community service to players seeking to improve their skills.

The baseball clinics feature LSU players and coaches offering instruction in all facets of the game, including hitting, pitching and fielding.

Youth baseball groups wishing to schedule a clinic should call the LSU baseball office at (225) 388-4148. Available clinic dates are limited,however, LSU will accommodate as many requests as possible.

Applications are now being evaluated by the Ten Star All-Star Basketball Camp. Boys and girls ages 7-19 can apply. Players are selected by invitation only. Past participants include Michael Jordan, Tim Duncan, Vince Carter, Jerry Stackhouse, Grant Hill, Bobby Hurley, Antawn Jamison, Christian Laettner, Tom Gugliotta and Trajan Langdon.

Camp locations include Atlanta; Riverside, Calif.; Babson Park, Fla.;Champagne, Ill., Fort Wayne, Ind.; Atchison, Kan.; Georgetown, Ky.;Northfield, Minn.; Raleigh, N.C.; Boiling Springs, N.C.; Rochester, N.Y.; NorthCanton, Ohio; Commerce, Texas; and Farmville, Va. College basketball scholarships are possible for the most advanced players.

The LSU AgCenter is holding two Parents and Chidren’s Kamps this spring at Camp Grant Walker in Pollock.

The first will be held April 14-16 and is open to mothers and their children. The second is May 19-21 and is open to fathers and theirchildren. The camp is especially for parents and children between the ages of nine and 12 and will focus on enhancing family relationships through activities such as canoeing, archery, fishing, shooting and orienteering taught by trained instructors.

The registration fee is $70 for each parents and child – $35 for each additional child. The fee covers meals, lodging and supplies used for theweekend. For more information and for an application, contact your countyagent’s office.

The Junior Achievement Golf Sampler Card allows area golfers to drive the fairways at 12 of the local golf courses.

The Golf Sampler Card is $39 and entitles the cardholder to play a total of 49 rounds of golf among the participating courses – Audubon, Bayou Barriere, Colonial, Colonial Acres, Eastover, Ellendale, Lakewood, Oak Harbor, Ormond, Pinewood, Stonebridge and Timberlane. Supporters of thegold card will also receive a complimentary Junior Achievement golf towel. The card is valid from Jan. 1 through Dec. 31, 2000. Proceeds from the Golf Sampler Card benefit Junior Achievement’s K-12 in-school free enterprise programs. This year alone, Junior Achievementand its 900 volunteers will teach more than 25,000 local students in over 140 schools about the relevance of education to the workplace and to prepare them for lifelong learning.

Special Olympics Louisiana’s new “Share the Victory” motor vehicle recycling program allows anyone in Orleans, Jefferson, St. Bernard, St. Tammany and St. Charles parishes to turn extra or unwantedvehicles into “something special for Special Olympics.”An individual can call the “Share the Victory” toll-free number and Special Olympics will arrange to tow away their motor vehicle for free.

The vehicle will be recycled into the funds needed to support the year- round program of sports training and athletic competition for mentally- retarded children and adults in Louisiana.

Vehicles can be in any condition to qualify as long as the owner has the title. Consumers may also be able to take advantage of a tax deduction asthe fair market price of the vehicle is considered a tax deductible donation to Special Olympics.
