Middle of the order leads YellowJackets past DHS

DESTREHAN – The middle of the order proved to be tops for Denham Springs against Destrehan Saturday morning.

Three-, four- and five-hole hitters Jason Curtis, Mike Kabel and Brandon Holloman combined to go 8-for-9 with two home runs and five runs batted in as the Yellowjackets defeated the Wildcats, 13-2, in the Destrehan-Hahnville Tournament. The game was called after five innings due to the 10-run rule.Destrehan (5-3) went on defeat Ridgewood, 8-7, scoring four runs in the bottom of the fifth to rally from a 7-0 deficit. The Wildcats defeated Baker,12-7, Friday. Larry Matherne homered and drove in five runs to lead theWildcats. Randy Roth also homered and went 2-for-3. Craig Naquin went 4-for-4 and drove in three runs and picked up the victory to improve to 2-0 on the season.

Denham Springs (6-5), lost to Ridgewood, 13-0, Friday and to Hahnville, 6-5, and Shaw, 5-1, Saturday.

In the first inning against Destrehan Saturday, the Yellowjackets’ Marshall Varnado drew a walk from Wildcats starter Nathan Maggiore and Kevin Richardson was hit by a pitch to open the game. Two wild pitches scoredVarnado and sent Richardson to third. Curtis followed with a single to center,scoring Richardson to make it 2-0.

After Kabel walked, Randy Roth came in to pitch for Destrehan. A walk byBrandon Holloman loaded the bases before Roth struck out Josh Darensbourg for the first out. Joey Mouton grounded to shortstop to force Holloman,bringing in Curtis for a 3-0 lead.

Denham Springs added three more in the top of the second. With one out,Varnado singled to center, went to third on two wild pitches and scored an out later as Curtis beat out a single to short. Curtis then stole second andthird and scored as catcher Todd Picou’s throw went past third. Kabelfollowed with a home run over the left field wall, increasing the lead to 6-0.

Destrehan came back with a run in the bottom half of the inning. With oneout, Danny Krieger ripped a double to left off Denham Springs starter Wes Partin and went to third on Michael Catalano’s grounder to the mound.

Maggiore followed with a single to left, scoring Krieger to cut the deficit to 6-1.

The Wildcats pulled closer in the bottom of the third. With one out, DonnieHollis reached second on a throwing error by Chase Amis on a grounder to third. Hollis advanced to third as Partin’s pickoff throw went into center fieldand scored on Naquin’s single to left.

Denham Springs pulled away in the top of the fourth, scoring six runs to take a 12-2 lead. Darensbourg’s three-run home run to right was the big blow ofthe inning.

Denham Springs added another run in the fifth as Kabel doubled to right and scored on Holloman’s single to left.
