Pitching leads Lady Comet sweep

LULING – Marci Martin and Lacey Trepagnier combined to give up two runs as St. Charles Catholic swept the three games of the Hahnville Lady TigersTournament Saturday at West Bank Bridge Park.

Martin improved to 4-0 with wins over Dominican, 5-0, and Hahnville, 2-1.

Trepagnier also moved to 4-0 with a 3-1 victory over Fontainebleau.

In the opener, Martin allowed three hits while walking one and striking out six in blanking Dominican. Dominican stranded seven in the game, four in scoringposition.

St. Charles Catholic (8-0) jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the firstinning. Cristin Clement led off with a walk, went around to third on a sacrificeby Courtney Vicknair and scored as Martin grounded out to second.

Dominican threatened in the top of the fourth inning as Alica Perry led off with a single past third and was sacrificed to second by Alice Puderer.

Melissa Calato then lofted a fly ball into short left field that bounced off Trepagnier’s glove, putting runners at second and third with one out. LaurenPerry grounded out to short with the runners holding and Martin struck out Ali Mullins to end the inning.

The Lady Comets increased their lead to 2-0 in the bottom half of the inning.

Martin lined a triple to right field to open the inning and scored on Jessie Zeringue’s long fly ball to right.

St. Charles Catholic broke the game open with three runs in the bottom ofthe fifth. With one out, Stephanie Trosclair walked and went to second on awild pitch. Clement followed with a single to third, sending Trosclair to third.After Clement stole second, Vicknair bounced a grounder up the middle through the drawn in outfield for a triple, scoring Trosclair and Clement to make it 4-0. Vicknair scored as Martin flew out to center, giving the LadyComets a 5-0 lead.

Dominican again threatened in the top of the sixth. Tori Burke led off byreaching on a throwing error by Jenni Traina at short. Perry then groundedto third with Burke reaching second on a high throw by Kristen Clement, putting runners at first and second with none out.

After Puderer lined out to second, pinch hitter Stephanie Hill grounded to short. Burke ran into Traina while she was fielding the ball and was called outfor interference. Martin then got Perry to ground out to short to end theinning. The game was called at that point because of the time limit.Trepagnier held Fontainebleau to three hits in the second game. Zeringue andKristen Clement each knocked in a run in a three-run first inning for the Lady Comets.

Martin pitched a five-hitter in the tournament finale against Hahnville. Martinalso contributed two hits as did Cristin Clement.
