RCS outlasts Lady Blazers

RESERVE – The Reserve Christian Lady Eagles continued their hot hitting against Hosanna Tuesday afternoon, defeating the Lady Blazers for the second time this season, 17-9.

The game was called after the top of the sixth do to darkness.

The contest was the first at the Lady Eagles’ new diamond. ReserveChristian (3-0) had won at Hosanna, 20-1, in the season opener last week.

Hosanna would strike first with four runs in the top of the first inning.

Sharlene Smith walked and Kristin Booth reached on a fielder’s choice to open the inning. Summer Belmer then beat out a grounder to shortstop withSmith scoring on an overthrow by Amber Keller.

One out later, Booth came in as Jennifer Fried reached on a fielder’s choice.

Walks by Amber Leger and Rachel Kennedy off Reserve Christian starter Angie Tucker brought in two runs to make it 4-0.

Reserve Christian came right back in the bottom of the inning against Smith, the Hosanna starter. Tucker led off with a walk, stole second, went to thirdas Renee Delaneuville reached on an error by Fried at second and scored on a wild pitch. Stephanie Wilking, who courtesy ran for Delaneuville, came in onMary Venus’ ground out to second to cut the deficit in half.

With two outs, Keller walked, stole second and scored as Shelly Ford lined a triple to left field. After Summer Vicknair and Brittany Dufrene walked toload the bases, Shirmonica Bernard cleared down with a double to left- center. Bernard was thrown out at third to end the inning but her hit ahdgiven the Lady Eagles a 6-4 lead.

Hosanna got a run back in the top of the second as Booth led off with a double and scored on a throwing error by Keller on Lani Landreneau’s grounder to short.

Reserve Christian answered with five in the bottom half of the inning to take a 11-5 lead. Tucker and Delaneuville led off with walks to open the inning andscored on wild pitches. Venus followed with a walk off Landreneau, who hadcome in to relieve Fried, and also scored on a wild pitch to make it 9-5.

With one out, Keller walked and went to third on Ford’s double to left.

Vicknair followed with another double to right, scoring both runners to make it 11-5.

Hosanna made it a two-run game with four runs in the top of the third. AmyThompson, Kennedy, Smith and Booth drew consecutive walks to drive in a run with one out. After Keller came in to relieve Tucker, Belmer singled toleft to make it 11-7.

After Landreneau drove in another run with a fielder’s choice, Fried flied out to center. Booth beat the throw to the plate to make it 11-9 but Belmer wasthrown out at third by Delaneuville to end the inning.

Reserve Christian completed the scoring with three runs in both the fourth and fifth innings.

In the fourth, Bridget Giroir led off with a double and Keller walked for the third time in the game. Following a force out at third on a grounder by Ford,Vicknair hit a chopper in front of the plate.

Landreneau fielded the ball and threw past first, allowing courtesy runner Wilking and Ford to score and sending Vicknair to second. Vicknair advancedto third on a wild pitch and scored as Bernard reached on an error to give the Lady Eagles a 14-9 lead.

In the fifth, Wilking beat out a grounder to third, Megan Venus walked and Keller singled to lead off the inning. Mattie Keller followed with a walk to drivein Wilking. One out later, a walk and a sacrifice fly by Tiffany Bernard to rightmade it 17-9.

Keller retired the side in order in the top of the sixth before the game was called. She finished with two strikeouts and a walk and three hits allowed in 32/3 innings of work. Tucker (1-0) picked up the win, pitching 2 1/3 innings,striking out three while walking eight and giving up two hits.
