Tigers hold off Comets in jamboree opener

LAPLACE – Hahnville scored six runs in the bottom of the first, then held off a St. Charles Catholic rally for an 8-6 victory in the first game of the St.Charles Catholic Jamboree Saturday morning.
In other games, Hahnville defeated Vandebilt Catholic, 4-0. Vandebilt cameback to defeat Northshore, 8-6. East St. John took two, 5-3 over Northshoreand 8-0 over Capitol. St. Charles Catholic closed out the day with a 10-0 winover Capitol.
After Erik Donnaud held the Comets in the top of the first inning, Kade Rogers led off the bottom half with an infield single along the third baseline.
Jeff Williams followed with a walk with Donnaud knocking in both runners with a double to left field.
Courtesy runner Ron Johnson scored as Chris Hawkins reached on an error by first baseman Matt Fisse. Two outs later, Mike Picard reached as his popup to short fell in and Lee Tregre drew a walk from Comet starter Dustin Braud to load the bases.
Dustin Roussell then lined a single to left to score Hawkins. Picard and Tregrescored and Roussell went to third as the ball got past right fielder Jason LaPorte, making it 6-0.
St. Charles Catholic answered with four runs in the top of the second. Fisseled off with a walk and went to second on a single to left by Braud. One outlater, Randy Madere lined a double off the right field wall, driving in Fisse to cut the deficit to 6-1. A walk by Jason Rauch loaded the bases.With two outs, LaPorte brought in two runs by reaching on an error at first by Matt Caire. Donnaud came back to strike out Toby Jacob to end the inning.The Tigers got a run back in the bottom of the inning as Donnaud walked with one out, went to second on a single by Hawkins and reached third on a passed ball. Johnson then lifted a long fly to center, scoring Donnaud to make it 7-4.Jason Waguespack walked to lead off the third. Braud followed one out laterwith a home run over the right-center field fence, cutting the Tigers’ lead to 7-6. Caire, who had come in to relieve Donnaud at the top of the inning, thenstruck out Jeremy Triche and got Madere on a grounder back to the mound to end the inning.
Hahnville got a run in the bottom of the third as Picard reached on an error to open the inning, went to second on a walk by Roussell and scored on Williams’ two-out double to right.
Hahnville opened its season Monday at home against Ponchatoula. St. CharlesCatholic had its season opener Tuesday at home against Grace King.
