OLG takes tournament title

LAPLACE – Our Lady of Grace completed its sweep of the River Parish Catholic League by defeating Ascension of Our Lord, 37-28, in the tournament championship game Saturday afternoon at St. Charles Catholic.Our Lady of Grace had already won the league’s regular season title and had advanced to the second round of the Archdiocese playoffs.

Erin Kelly led Our Lady of Grace Saturday with a game-high 18 points. JamieJoseph chipped in with 10 points and Torriel Simon with seven.

Ascension of Our Lord was led by Brittany Vicknair with 13 points. HeatherGamble added nine points.

Our Lady of Grace jumped out to a 7-0 on Joseph’s 3-pointer from the right wing with 4:30 left in the first period. Vicknair cut the deficit to three on athree-point play and a free throw. Our Lady of Grace came right back asJoseph scored off a steal by Bianca Cambre. Kelly followed two possessionslater by taking another steal in and later added two free throws to make it 13-4 at the end of the first quarter.

A layup off a steal by Joseph and a put back by Kelly built the lead to 20-8 midway through the second quarter. Vicknair knocked down a 3-pointer fromthe right wing and Tiffany Eddie added two free throws to bring Ascension of Our Lord to within seven. Kelly answered with a jumper from the left baselineat the buzzer to increase the lead back to 23-13 at halftime.

Amber McIntosh took a pass from Gamble inside and Vicknair hit a jumper from the free throw line to bring Ascension of Our Lord to within five early in the second half. A drive by Kelly and a pass from Maya Creecy to Simoninside made it 27-20. After two free throws by Gamble, Simon knocked downa jumper and Creecy followed with a put back to give Our Lady of Grace a 31- 22 lead heading into the fourth quarter.

Ascension of Our Lord took advantage of foul trouble by Kelly to pull to within five early in the fourth quarter. Drives by Gamble and Vicknair cut thedeficit to 31-26 with 4:26 remaining. After Creecy found Joseph driving thelane, Eddie hit a jumper in the lane to make it 33-28. But that would be asclose as the Crusaders would get as Kelly came back in to score on a put back and a drive in the final minutes.

In the junior varsity championships, St. Charles Borromeo defeated St. Joanof Arc, 20-15.
