Local recruits making final plans

LAPLACE – Four more River Parishes athletes committed in the final days before National Signing Day.

East St. John’s Roy Del Williams, the state’s top receiving prospect,committed to Tulane after a visit there this weekend. Williams, who is fullyqualified academically, chose the Green Wave over LSU.

Williams was an all-state selection in Class 5A after catching 61 passes for 1,341 yards and 17 touchdowns, all school records. Williams also holdsschool records for longest touchdown reception, most receptions in a game and most touchdown receptions.

Riverside’s Joe Trosclair, a Class 2A all-state selection at tackle, committed to Nicholls State over the weekend. Trosclair helped the Rebels run for over2,000 yards in 1999 and was named all-District 9-2A and all-Metro.

“Nicholls State is getting a Division I-type player,” Riverside coach Mickey Roussel said. “They are getting a steal. He is a quality athlete. He iscomfortable about not having to change positions.”Other schools had considered moving Trosclair to center in college. LSUoffered him a TOPs scholarship when he visited there this weekend but Nicholls State had offered a full athletic scholarship.

Joining Trosclair at Nicholls State is Destrehan linebacker Jamall Johnson.

Johnson led the Wildcats with 93 tackles, 72 solo, in 1999. He also had threesacks and seven tackles behind the line of scrimmage.

Lutcher quarterback Thomas Ricks selected Southern over the weekend.

Ricks had also considered Southern Mississippi, Louisiana Tech and Nicholls State. He is the second River Parishes athlete to commit to Southern, joiningSt. James center Damon Oubre. Ricks, an honorable mention all-State selection in Class 3A, helped lead the Bulldogs to their first outright district title in 16 years in 1999. Hecompleted 101 of his 191 passes for 1,841 yards and 15 touchdowns this past season.

In other recruiting news, St. James coach Rick Gaille said quarterback CoreyWebster had a good visit to LSU over the weekend. Webster has narrowed hischoices down to LSU and Southern Mississippi.

West St. John’s Donriel Louis is expected to sign with LSU today. Brian Lumarwill choose between McNeese and Georgia Tech while tight end Marlon Jackson is expected to sign with Grambling.
