Rickson leads Lady Tigers’ rally

BOUTTE – Toyelle Rickson scored 36 points to lead Hahnville to a come from behind 52-45 victory over South Lafourche Friday night in the Tiger gym.

Hahnville improved to 15-12 overall and 4-3 in District 7-5A play. SouthLafourche fell to 13-8 overall and 3-4 in district.

South Lafourche took a 30-25 lead midway through the third quarter on a drive along the right baseline by Lacey Lasseigne. But Rickson answered withnine straight points to bring the Lady Tigers back.

Rickson opened the run with by taking a steal in. After a put back twopossessions later, Rickson scored off a steal by Liz Landry to give Hahnville its first lead of the half at 31-30 with 2:25 left in the third quarter. Shelater added a free throw and took a drive in to build the lead to four with 1:20 remaining.

South Lafourche broke the run with a jumper by Desi Sanders but Hahnville answered with two free throws by Rickson and a jumper by Cashmir White to take a 38-32 lead into the fourth quarter.

Lasseigne cut the deficit to three with a 3-pointer from the top of the key on the Lady Tarpons’ first possession of the fourth quarter. But Hahnvillecame right back two possessions later with a 3-pointer from the right wing by Karen Bass. A jumper and put back by Rickson and a jumper from theright baseline by White built the lead to 47-38 with three minutes left.

Lasseigne scored off a steal by Sanders to make it a six-point game with 1:30 left. But Hahnville was able to run down the clock on its next twopossessions, getting free throws by Rickson and Bass to extend the lead back to nine in the final seconds.

“It’s a good win,” Hahnville coach earl Oestreicher said. “We were able to getone win up on them for the last playoff spot with five games left. Our goalwas to get more rebounds and the girls came through.”White added six points for the Tigers while Bass and Alana Lumar chipped in with five points apiece.

Lasseigne led South Lafourche with 17 points. Sanders was the only otherscorer in double figures with 10 points.

South Lafourche jumped out to a 13-5 lead at the end of the first quarter on a layup by Maithe Liner and a three-point play by Lasseigne. Hahnville pulledto within two on an 8-2 run to open the second quarter. Lumar started therun with a put back and a drive inside. After two free throws by White and adrive by Alisha Adams, Rickson scored on a put back to make it 15-13.

Casey Guidry scored inside, then grabbed a steal in the backcourt and took it in to extend the lead back to 19-13 with 5:24 left in the second quarter.

Rickson scored on a jumper from the left baseline, then took a pass from Renelle Fields inside to cut the deficit to one with 3:46 left. Another passfrom Fields to Rickson gave the Lady Tigers a 20-19 lead with 2:03 left in the half.

The lead seesawed in the final minute with South Lafourche going back on top on a drive by Lasseigne. Fields and Rickson combined again to regain the leadfor Hahnville. But Brandi Reynolds scored on a put back in the final secondsto give the Lady Tarpons a 23-22 halftime lead.

South Lafourche extended its lead to 28-23 early in the third quarter on a pass from Beth Cheramie to Lasseigne inside. Free throws by Lumar andRickson cut the deficit to three.

Hahnville played at District 7-5A leader East St. John last night. The LadyTigers host South Terrebonne Friday in district play.
