Foret, Nailor retain leadership roles on board

LUTCHER – The St. James School Board held its first meeting of the newyear Tuesday. Kenneth Foret Sr. and Charles Nailor Sr. were voted to retaintheir positions as president and vice president of the board.
The board ran through normal business items, with Foret presenting the executive committee meeting report and Lloyd LeBlanc presenting the finance committee meeting report.
The administrative report was outlined by Foret and approved, by vote, by the board. Among the list of items were payment to Hi-Tech Services forthe work done on Lutcher High’s athletic facility, renewal of Xerox’s contract with the schools, request for pole vault and hurdle equipment for Lutcher High and a drug and alcohol testing policy for St. James High andLutcher High athletes.
The drug and alcohol testing policy is in cooperation with the Louisiana High School Athletic Association. Twenty percent of student athletes willbe tested annually, and 2 percent will be tested monthly. The principal ofthe school will choose the undisclosed testing dates, according to the board.
No athlete will participate in sports unless a form, giving consent to the testing, is signed by both the student and the parents.
Susan Batson of the sate Department of Education was present to give out an award to the board. The St. James Parish Public School System washonored for its Special Education Program. When tested by the state, theprogram had proved a success at exemplary levels, said Batson.
Also on the agenda was a resolution to support Kaiser’s application for an environmental permit. The board voted 5-1 with Foret abstaining andKathleen Becnel voting against the support. The permit is required in orderfor Kaiser to rebuild its facility.
In another matter, the board learned the schools” library computer systems had been brought down by the Y2K problem. Superintendent EdCancienne said the libraries were manually checking their books out to the students. He also explained that new computers had been purchased for thelibraries, and they were currently obtaining software. The new librarycomputers should be up and running soon, he said.
