WASHINGTON LET GO BY PACKERS – Former Lutcher High and Tulane star Lionel Washington was fired this week by the Green Bay Packers along with head coach Ray Rhodes and the rest of his staff.

Rhodes was let go after one season with the Packers. Green Bay finished8-8 and missed the playoffs for the first time since 1992. Rhodes washired last year to replace Mike Holmgren, who left after seven seasons with the Packers to become the head coach at Seattle. Washington joinedRhodes’ staff last February as an assistant defensive backs coach.

MITCHELL NEW WILDCAT BASEBALL COACH – Nick Mitchell was elevated to head baseball coach at East St. John this week, replacing CareyOurso who resigned recently.

Mitchell served as assistant baseball coach last season along with David Grenfell and will coach the Wildcats this season on an interim basis.

Grenfell will assist with the team.

Ourso led the Wildcats to a 19-15-1 record in his lone season as head coach in 1999. East St. John advanced to the Class 5A quarterfinals for thefirst time since 1995, falling to Rummel, 10-0.

RICKS NAMED TOURNAMENT MVP – Lutcher’s Thomas Ricks was named the MVP of the St. Martin’s Christmas Classic after leading the Bulldogs tothe tournament championship. Ricks scored 34 points in three games,including a game-high 13 points in the 51-49 championship game victory over St. Martin’s. Teammate Brian Nicholas was also selected to the all-tournament team after scoring 35 points in the three games, including game highs of 17 and 14 in victories over UMS-Wright and Rabouin, respectively.
