Tonnage amount moved from port still increasingL’Observateur / January 5, 2000LAPLACE – Third-quarter statistics released by the Port of South Louisiana estimate continued growth in tonnage moved during the period, exceeding 1998’s tonnage.

Patrick Dufresne, public information officer for the port, said this puts the Reserve-based port on pace to exceed 1998’s total tonnage of 218.2million short tons, with 67.0 million in this year’s third quarter alone and184.4 million total this year so far.Total 1999 tonnage through the third quarter was listed at 44,225,338 tons of imports, 49,023,848 tons of exports, 64,835,837 tons of domestic goods received and 26,387,378 tons of domestic goods shipped – a grand 1999 total of 184,472,401 tons in three quarters.
A breakdown of this year’s third quarter included 17.1 million tons ofexports, 14.9 million tons of imports, 9.0 million tons of domestic shippedtons and 25.8 million domestic received tons.The single leading export for the third quarter of 1999 was maize, totaling 8.8 million tons. Other leading exports included soybean (2.8million tons), animal feed (1.9 million tons) and wheat (1.3 million tons).Each also showed increases of shipment totals from the second quarter of the year.
The leading imports included crude oil (11.1 million tons), stone orconcrete (1.5 million tons) and petroleum products (1.2 million tons).A sharp increase in domestic received goods was noted, from 19.5 millionto 25.8 million tons, as maize increased from 7.7 million to 12.8 milliontons.
Other leading received goods included petroleum products (3.2 milliontons), soybean (2.5 million tons) and animal feed (1.8 million tons).Domestic shipped goods stayed approximately at the same level from the second to the third quarter of 1999. Leading shipped goods were petroleumproducts (5.7 million tons), chemicals or fertilizers (1.4 million tons) andedible oils, which rose from 222,000 tons in the second quarter to 554,000 in the third quarter.
