Scoreless spell hinders Riverside

KENNER – East Jefferson held Riverside scoreless in the third quarter to pull away to a 46-22 victory in the first game of the Ninth Annual Shake ‘n Bake on the Lake basketball tournament Monday morning in the Pontchartrain Center.

East Jefferson advanced to play O.P. Walker Tuesday morning. Riverside(4-8) loss to Holden, 67-63, Monday night and played Carver Tuesday.

East Jefferson grabbed a 17-16 lead at halftime and began to pull away in the third quarter. Theresa Samuels found Chandra Jackson inside to extendthe lead to 19-16 with 6:47 left in the quarter.

Samuels then did the rest of the scoring in the quarter, driving in three times to make it 25-16. Riverside missed on all six of its shots from thefloor during the run and turned the ball over five times.

East Jefferson continued to build its lead early in the fourth quarter. Onthe Lady Warriors’ first possession, Jackson found Samuels driving down the lane. Samuels was fouled on the play and added the free throw. On thenext possession, Danielle Tuckson drove in off a block by Samuels, making it 30-16.

Riverside got back on the board with 6:45 left in the game as Heather Montz found Jennifer Guidry driving down the lane. But East Jeffersoncame right back with a put back by Tuckson. Tuckson then took a pass fromSamuels inside and Samuels later added two free throws and a layup to make it 38-18.

The Lady Rebels scored on a pass from Wendy Reames to Crystal Rome inside at the 2:55 mark but a drive by Samuels gave the Lady Warriors a 42-20 lead. Two free throws by Adrienne Albares completed the scoringfor the Lady Rebels with 1:14 left.

Riverside held the lead early behind a 3-pointer from the top of the key by Rome and a jumper by Guidry. Rome drove the lane for a layup, giving theLady Rebels an 8-2 lead with less than three minutes left in the first quarter.

Andra Francis knocked down two jumpers from the right side to make it 8- 6 at the end of the quarter.

East Jefferson tied the game with 5:50 left in the half as Jackson found Francis inside and went ahead on a jumper by Tuckson from the left side. Aput back and a jumper by Francis built the lead to 15-10 midway through the quarter.

Riverside came back, regaining the lead at 16-15 as Amy Hymel drove in twice and Rome hit a jumper in the paint. But two free throws by Franciswith 1:19 left gave the Lady Warriors the halftime lead.

Samuels had 11 points in the fourth quarter and 17 in the second half to finish with a game-high 20 points.

Francis scored 12 points, all in the first half, while Tuckson contributed eight points.

Rome paced Riverside with 11 points. Guidry and Hymel chipped in withfour points apiece.
