Tigers shake off layoff, roll past Lawless

BOUTTE – Coming off a 10-day layoff, Hahnville coach Alvin Gauthier wanted to get back to basics, especially on defense, when his team played host to Lawless Tuesday night.
The Tigers did just that, holding the Pythians to 31 percent shooting for the game in taking a 85-43 victory in the Hahnville gym. The victoryimproved the Tigers, ranked seventh in the metro area, to 7-3 overall.
Lawless fell to 3-3.
“That’s basically want we wanted to do,” Gauthier said of the defensive effort. “I wanted to get back to defense. That is really what winschampionships.”Dawan Landry led the offensive effort for the Tigers with 18 points. AaronAlexander contributed 15 points with Nick Cannon and Mark Temple chipping in with 10 points apiece.
Lawless was led by Terry Youngblood with 16 points. David Johnson added10 and Jason Jones 9.
Hahnville jumped out to a six-point lead in the first quarter behind five points by Cannon and four by Alexander. Youngblood scored seven points inthe quarter to keep the Pythians close. Woods put back a shot at the buzzerto make it 21-13 going into the second quarter.
The defense then took over, holding the Pythians scoreless over the first four minutes of the second quarter. Landry got the Tigers’ their firstpoints of the quarter by driving in off a pass from Cannon. Alexander thengrabbed a steal in the back court and drove in for a dunk. Al Fiffiefollowed with a drive along the left baseline to make it 29-13.
Youngblood got the Pythians their first points by driving the left baseline.
Hahnville answered with a jumper in the lane by Landry and a tip in by Micah Stewart. With 1:33 left in the half, Landry leaned in for a jumper.Landry then grabbed a steal and found Mark Young ahead, giving the Tigers a 40-19 lead at the half.
Hahnville kept up the pressure in the third quarter. After Youngblood hit ajumper in the lane, Young quickly got the ball upcourt and drove in for a layup. Drives by Landry and Alexander gave the Tigers a 50-23 lead with4:05 left in the quarter.
After two free throws by Davin Pierre, a technical foul was called on the Pythians. Stewart made both foul shots and Fiffie took a pass from Cannoninside to make it 62-29. Jones put back a shot for the Pythians butStewart answered with a put back at the buzzer to make it 64-31 heading into the fourth quarter.
Johnson banked in a 3-pointer from the left wing early in the third quarter to make it 70-36. Hahnville came back with drive by Landry, Cannon andTemple, the latter off a steal by Woods, to build the lead to 80-38 with 4:25 left in the game.
Hahnville is off until traveling to South Terrebonne to open District 7-5A play Jan. 4.
