SCC falls in first contest

METAIRIE – Sara Castano scored three goals and Megan Peck added two as St. Martin’s defeated St. Charles Catholic, 5-0, in the Lady Comets’ firstsoccer game.

St. Martin’s improved to 9-0 on the season while St. Charles Catholic fellto 0-1.

St. Martin’s, one of the top teams in the area, controlled much of the firsthalf. Three minutes into the game, Ginger’s Guzzetta’s shot from the rightside was grabbed by St. Charles Catholic goalie Jessica Jones. A minutelater, Peck tried a corner kick that sailed over the net. Castano then trieda kick from in front of the net that was grabbed by Jones.

Jones and the Lady Comets defense continued to keep the Saints off the scoreboard as kicks by Peck and Guzzetta from the left side were knocked away. The Saints finally broke through at the eight-minute mark as Peckmoved in and angled a kick that sailed over the reach of Jones into the top of the net, giving St. Martin’s a 1-0 lead.St. Martin’s quickly added to that lead as Castano moved in and angled akick to the left side of the net, making it 2-0 nine minutes into the contest.

Jennifer Billot knocked away a shot in front by Peck a minute later. Jonesthen grabbed a free kick by Peck at the 13 minute mark. But two minuteslater, Castano moved down the right side and again angled a kick to the left side of the net for her second goal, giving the Saints a 3-0 lead.

Jones would keep it a three-goal game by grabbing shots by Peck and Meri Maurer. At the 28-minute mark, Mary Scott Westfeldt moved in but had hershot deflected by Brittany Brooks to Jones. Jones then grabbed a straighton shot by Margaret Olivier.

St. Charles Catholic got its first shot on goal at the 35-minute mark asAmy Estes took a shot from midfield that St. Martin’s goal keeper AkilaSubramaniam came out to grab. Castano closed out the half with a shotfrom the right side that sailed through the crease.

St. Martin’s kept up the pressure early in the second half. Guzzetta movedin from the left but had her shot grabbed by Jones. Castano came rightback in and angled a kick to the left side of the net past Jones, giving her her third goal and St. Martin’s a 4-0 lead two minutes into the half. Eightminutes later, Peck got her second goal, breaking through the Lady Comet defense and angling a shot to the left side of the goal for a 5-0 lead.

The Lady Comet defense came through the rest of the half to keep it at that score. At the 14-minute mark, Olivier passed to Castano in front ofthe net, got the ball back and tried a shot that was grabbed by Jones.

“It was our first game and it showed,” St. Charles Catholic coach NormanBrignac said. “We got to see one of the best teams in the city and got tosee how to move the ball around. They had good ball control. But I thoughtJessica Jones played real good in goal. I thought they all did real good fora first time. Some of the players learned a lot.”St. Charles Catholic played the Hahnville junior varsity last night and willplay its first home game against Karr Jan. 4.
