Maybe it’s true – you can’t teach an old dog new tricks.

Or maybe old dogs are just too tired to add more tricks to an already abundant repertoire.

I’m feeling like that proverbial “old dog” (although I understand there’s another word used for the female variety) as I try to get used to a new job in a field where I have no prior experience. And what an experience it is! I am confusednow as much as I can ever remember.

Meanwhile, I’m still juggling other jobs and trying to get ready for Christmas.

On the upside, I’m working on the Tulane University campus within five minutes walking distance of the student union which practically has everything I need, namely a bookstore (heaven!), an ATM machine and fast food.

But I digress. Anyway, there have been several moments in the past couple ofweeks that I’ve asked myself if maybe I can’t learn things as quickly as I used to. I mean I did learn how to get to work, but that’s about all I’ve absorbed so farother than where to find the restroom and the student union.

Every night I crawl into bed exhausted after a grueling day of not learning much, then coming home in time to turn around and go back out again to take care of things I know how to do already but just don’t have much time for anymore. Iwake up the next day exhausted and crawl into something simple without accessories (too much work!).

I’m afraid those in the unenviable position of having to train me are shaking their heads on the way home and wondering exactly what must be on my resume.

But, meanwhile, Christmas cheer abounds and there are promises in the air that the holidays will bring peace to the job front.

And this tired old dog needs to lie down.
