Lady Cats roll past West St. John

EDGARD – Ashley Sentimore had 18 points to help Destrehan to a 79-26 victory at West St. John in non-district play Monday night.Destrehan, coming off a fifth-place finish at the St. Martin’s Tournamentover the weekend, improved to 8-4 on the season. West St. John slipped to1-5.
Diamonique Pollard contributed 12 points for the Lady Cats with Jasmone Hawkins and Meagan Stock chipping in with 10 points apiece. IreonBethancourt led West St. John with 12 points with Janelle Morris addingeight.
Sentimore had 12 of her points in the first quarter to help the Lady Cats take a 24-6 lead. A Sentimore basket inside gave Destrehan a 10-2 lead atthe 5:22 mark of the quarter. Morris banked in a jumper to cut the deficitto six before Sentimore and Pollard scored on put backs to make it a 10- point game. A put back by Hawkins gave the Lady Cats an 18-point leadheading into the second quarter.
Bethancourt opened the scoring in the quarter with a jumper before Jezreel Charles answered for Destrehan by taking a pass from Hawkins inside. Jump shots by Iesha Jenkins and Hawkins made it 32-10 at thehalf.
Destrehan continued to extend its lead in the opening minutes of the second half with Sentimore and Stock scoring inside. Ciarra Borne got theLady Rams back on the scoreboard with two free throws at the 5:26 mark but a drive by Sentimore and a layup by Maren Cameron off a steal by Pollard made it 40-12.
Morris hit the Rams’ first shot from the field at the 4:48 mark but Destrehan came back with a 3-pointer by Stock from the right side and Pollard scored on the break off a pass by Cameron to make it 49-16. Alayup by Stock off a steal by Hawkins made it 56-16 heading into the fourth quarter.
A 3-pointer from the left side by Jenkins made it 61-16 early in the fourth quarter. Bethancourt buried a 3-pointer from the left side beforeDestrehan came back with a jumper by Jenkins and a layup by Jessica Johnson to make it 67-19. A jumper by Latrell Boudoin and a 3-pointer byBethancourt concluded the scoring.
Destrehan travels to McDonogh 35 tonight. West St. John opens District 9-2A play Tuesday at home against Buras.
